Five people have been shot at Virginia State University (VSU) in an incident involving “multiple suspects” that sparked a campus lockdown.<\/p>\n

The victims were found outside dormitories when campus police and Chesterfield County officers responded just before 1.30am on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Police<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0said one person was in a critical condition and the others had non-life threatening injuries after the shooting, which happened near the Quad Annexes.<\/p>\n

The university said “multiple suspects” were involved and a “significant law enforcement presence” remained despite the lockdown ending around 9am.<\/p>\n

No arrests have been announced but officials said they would give more details later today.<\/p>\n

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are also involved, county police said.<\/p>\n

VSU is a historically black university in Ettrick, about 24 miles from state capital of Richmond, with about 5,700 students.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened before the start of the new academic year, which begins on Monday.<\/p>\n
