{"id":31096,"date":"2026-07-29T13:33:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T17:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=31096"},"modified":"2026-07-29T13:33:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T17:33:30","slug":"cyber-attackers-take-607000-records-from-uk-department-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2026\/07\/29\/cyber-attackers-take-607000-records-from-uk-department-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber-attackers take 607,000 records from UK Department of Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Hackers have obtained about 607,000 records in a cyber-attack on the Department for Education (DfE) in England.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The data taken includes telephone numbers and email addresses relating to individuals and organisations but does not include bank details or other sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The DfE confirmed the incident and said it is working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre and the National Crime Agency (NCA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The data protection risk to individuals is not considered high and it is understood the attack was contained quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Turing Scheme portal &#8211; a programme providing funding for international education &#8211; and the DfE online help desk have both been affected, but are expected to be operating normally later this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The DfE has referred itself to the Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We have robust processes in place to protect information and took swift action to contain this incident&#8221;, a DfE spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The information involved is limited to customer service contact details relating to individuals and organisations. No other data has been accessed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It stressed the 607,000 figure relates to the total number of records affected, not individuals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An NCA spokesperson said: &#8220;We are aware of an incident affecting the Department for Education and are working with partners to understand the circumstances and impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Cyber incidents within the education sector are becoming more frequent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Around a quarter of further education institutions (24%) reported experiencing a breach or attack at least weekly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/cyber-security-breaches-survey-20252026\/cyber-security-breaches-survey-20252026-education-institutions-findings#chapter-2-key-findings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the government&#8217;s most recent Cyber Security Breaches Survey.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">And more than half of schools have reported an attack or breach in the last year.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cq6dmgrp21po\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Hackers have obtained about 607,000 records in a cyber-attack on the Department for Education (DfE) in England.
