{"id":30999,"date":"2026-07-05T07:35:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T11:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30999"},"modified":"2026-07-05T07:35:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T11:35:17","slug":"google-must-pay-record-e4-1bn-fine-over-antitrust-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2026\/07\/05\/google-must-pay-record-e4-1bn-fine-over-antitrust-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Google must pay record \u20ac4.1bn fine over antitrust issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google will have to pay a record \u20ac4.1bn (\u00a33.5bn, $4.67bn) fine after it lost its fight against EU antitrust regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years ago, the search engine giant was handed a \u20ac4.3bn fine by the regulator for using Android to block rivals &#8211; that fine was subsequently reduced to \u20ac4.1bn on appeal.<\/p>\n<p>However, when Google took the case to Europe&#8217;s highest court, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the court sided with regulators.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The appeal brought by Google and its \u200bparent company Alphabet against the judgment of the General Court is dismissed, \u200bthereby confirming the penalty imposed for Google Search&#8217;s abuse of a dominant position in the \u200ccontext of \u2060the Android operating system,&#8221; said the judges.<\/p>\n<p>A Google spokesperson said the judgment failed to take into account its investment to ensure Android remains open, interoperable and free.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In any event, we adapted our agreements to comply with the initial \u200bdecision back in 2018 \u200band we remain \u2060focused on continued innovation and openness for our users, partners and developers&#8221;, Google said.<\/p>\n<p>The fine was originally imposed over allegations the company had forced Android manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and Chrome as a condition of allowing them to offer access to its Play app store.<\/p>\n<p>Google was also accused of paying manufacturers who agreed to exclusively pre-install Google Search on devices and threatening manufacturers who used different versions of Android but wanted to pre-install Google apps.<\/p>\n<p>The record fine is just part of the eye-watering \u00a311bn sum racked up by Google in EU fines over the last decades; in the last two years alone, it has been fined another \u20ac5.35bn by the EU for antitrust breaches.<\/p>\n<p>The latest news is likely to antagonise US President\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/donald-trump-5711\/1\" target=\"_self\">Donald Trump<\/a><\/strong>, who has accused the EU of unfairly targeting American companies.
