{"id":30956,"date":"2026-06-28T04:27:30","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T08:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30956"},"modified":"2026-06-28T04:27:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T08:27:30","slug":"four-men-held-over-child-marriage-in-sierra-leone-appear-in-landmark-court-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2026\/06\/28\/four-men-held-over-child-marriage-in-sierra-leone-appear-in-landmark-court-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Four men held over child marriage in Sierra Leone appear in landmark court case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">For the first time since child marriage was banned in Sierra Leone two years ago, people accused of committing the crime have been brought to trial.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Four men appeared at a High Court on Friday in the capital city, Freetown, charged with the forcible marriage of a 17-year-old girl.<\/p>\n<p>The accused \u2014 Sayo Marrah, Lansana Qura, Salieu Kamara, and Abu Bakarr Kamara \u2014 are facing three counts: contracting marriage with a child, consenting to child marriage, and aiding and abetting child marriage, contrary to Sections 2, 3, and 10 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Among the accused are the girl&#8217;s father and her so-called husband. The father is alleged to have consented to the marriage and participated in the ceremony. The other accused are also alleged to have facilitated the union, playing active roles in ensuring the marriage was successfully conducted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">All four men pleaded guilty &#8211; but because the alleged groom claimed he had obtained consent from the child&#8217;s mother for the marriage, relying on the outdated customary marriage act, his plea was re-classed by the prosecutor as &#8220;not guilty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">If convicted, the defendants will be jailed for at least 15 years or fined around $4,000 (\u00a33,200), or both. Their next hearing is due on 2 July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Under the new law, even those who attend the wedding of a child can be arrested and jailed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sierra Leone is a patriarchal society and it has long been common for a father to give his daughter&#8217;s hand in marriage forcibly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Despite the fact that 18 is now the minimum age to wed, many instances of underage girls being forced to marry persist in the country, often officiated by local religious figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prosecutors say this particular marriage happened in Grafton, in the outskirts of the capital city Freetown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The charges represent a significant milestone in the enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2024&#8221;, Sierra Leone&#8217;s Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay told the BBC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"links\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1gccci3-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<ul class=\"ssrcss-94r6ik-Stack e1y4nx260\" role=\"list\">\n<li class=\"ssrcss-qzx51b-LinkItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1gccci3-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-7zrqh4-LinkHeadline e3eyuya4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvgzpz7zyd4o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">From escaping child marriage &#8216;to an old pervert&#8217; to becoming Sierra Leone&#8217;s first lady<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ssrcss-qzx51b-LinkItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1gccci3-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-7zrqh4-LinkHeadline e3eyuya4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx02p44px1do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Child marriage ban welcomed in Sierra Leone<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ssrcss-qzx51b-LinkItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1gccci3-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-7zrqh4-LinkHeadline e3eyuya4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-65423644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">I believe my girlfriend died because her genitals were cut<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He confirmed this was the first time that charges had been brought against anyone for offences related to contracting, consenting to or facilitating child marriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Before 2024 we had conflicting pieces of legislation one of which \u2013 the Customary Marriage Act \u2013 allowed parents to give their consent if the bride was a minor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But this changed two years ago when customary law was struck out, he explained, giving &#8220;a new regime to indict anyone taking part in the marriage of someone below the age of 18&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The four men in this landmark case are charged with contracting marriage with a child, consenting to child marriage, plus aiding and abetting child marriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The bride&#8217;s father is alleged to have facilitated the marriage between one of the defendants and the child, and allegedly played active roles during the marriage ceremony, &#8220;ensuring that the marriage was successfully conducted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Gender activists have been quick to respond to the unprecedented move. The president of the all-female lawyers&#8217; group, Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equality Rights and Social Justice, told the BBC she felt &#8220;extremely happy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Menisa Sesay said it showed the legal reforms for which they had fought so hard were finally being enforced, vindicating their mission to protect the rights of vulnerable women and girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As many as 30% of girls in Sierra Leone are married before they turn 18, according to a recent report by Human Rights Watch, while in rural areas some of the brides are said to be as young as 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Activists had expressed concerns that despite the tough laws, lawbreakers were not being reined in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The charges brought against the four\u2026 is reassuring that there is light at the end of the tunnel for women and girls in Sierra Leone,&#8221; Sesay said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Friday&#8217;s development comes a day after the regional Ecowas Court of Justice in Abuja, Nigeria, delivered a judgment involving an 11-year-old Sierra Leonean girl which was filed in 2024 by the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa and AdvocAid Limited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It found that &#8220;Sierra Leone failed to take adequate measures to prevent and eliminate child marriage and to effectively protect the minor in the case and other girls from the practice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The ruling said that child marriage constituted a form of gender-based violence and found that Sierra Leone failed in its obligation to properly investigate the child marriage of the minor.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c9q212y8p21o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sierraloaded.sl\/news\/historic-first-enforcement-child-marriage-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sierraloaded.sl<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">For the first time since child marriage was banned in Sierra Leone two years ago, people accused of committing the crime have been brought to trial.
