{"id":30695,"date":"2026-04-21T11:26:27","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T15:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30695"},"modified":"2026-04-21T11:26:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T15:26:27","slug":"mass-trial-for-486-alleged-ms-13-gang-leaders-begins-in-el-salvador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2026\/04\/21\/mass-trial-for-486-alleged-ms-13-gang-leaders-begins-in-el-salvador\/","title":{"rendered":"Mass trial for 486 alleged MS-13 gang leaders begins in El Salvador"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-oyhass-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A mass trial of 486 suspected MS-13 gang leaders has begun in El Salvador, the country&#8217;s attorney general&#8217;s office has said.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The group are collectively accused of committing more than 47,000 crimes &#8211; including murder, extortion, drug and arms trafficking &#8211; between 2012 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Among those on trial are people alleged to have been involved in a wave of gang violence in March 2022, which saw 87 people killed in one weekend, and led President Nayib Bukele to declare a &#8220;war on gangs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The attorney general&#8217;s office did not provide details on the length of the trial, but said it had &#8220;compelling&#8221; evidence that would allow &#8220;maximum penalties&#8221; to be imposed on those found guilty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-oyhass-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">MS-13 is a transnational gang which was designated as a terrorist organisation by the US last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was founded in Los Angeles during the 1980s, formed by immigrants who had fled El Salvador&#8217;s civil war, but its presence is now larger in Central America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The attorney general&#8217;s office said &#8220;for years, this structure has operated systematically, instilling fear and grief in Salvadoran families&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It said the charges against the 486 suspects people also included femicide and disappearances, adding that the crimes had impacted lives and limited the country&#8217;s economic and social development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In addition, the accused are charged with &#8220;rebellion for attempting to maintain territorial control to establish a parallel state&#8221;, the office said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It said 413 suspects were already in custody, while arrest warrants had been issued for 73 others who are being prosecuted in absentia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">El Salvador&#8217;s National Civil Police said it had developed research and monitoring efforts enabling it to &#8220;locate, capture, and document the criminal activity of the suspects&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A controversial\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-62205981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state of emergency<\/a>, which expanded powers to arrest those suspected of gang affiliation or support and suspened some constitutional rights, has been in place in El Salvador since March 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It has seen tens of thousands of suspected gang members arrested, but human rights groups have argued it has led to arbitrary detentions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Legal changes in the country have also allowed for mass trials.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c20ql985gryo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A mass trial of 486 suspected MS-13 gang leaders has begun in El Salvador, the country&#8217;s attorney general&#8217;s office has said.
