{"id":30480,"date":"2026-02-23T04:51:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T09:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30480"},"modified":"2026-02-23T04:51:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T09:51:11","slug":"violence-erupts-in-mexico-after-drug-lord-el-mencho-killed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2026\/02\/23\/violence-erupts-in-mexico-after-drug-lord-el-mencho-killed\/","title":{"rendered":"Violence erupts in Mexico after drug lord El Mencho killed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A wave of violence has broken out in Mexico after the country&#8217;s most wanted drug baron was killed in an operation seeking his arrest.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as &#8220;El Mencho&#8221;, was the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) drug cartel and died after being seriously injured in clashes between his supporters and the army on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Four CJNG members were killed during the operation in the town of Tapalpa, in the central-western Jalisco state, and three army personnel were also injured, the Mexican defence ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Retaliation for the drug lord&#8217;s death has seen violence spread to at least a dozen states, with CJNG blocking roads with burning vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Throughout Sunday there were reports of gunmen on the streets in Jalisco and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Eyewitnesses filmed plumes of smoke rising over several cities including Guadalajara &#8211; one of the host cities of the forthcoming Fifa World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Jalisco&#8217;s Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro declared a code red in the state, pausing all public transport and cancelling mass events and in-person classes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Tourists who spoke to news agency Reuters described the resort town of Puerto Vallarta as a &#8220;war zone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Some 250 roadblocks were in place across the country during the unrest, with 65 in Jalisco, the BBC&#8217;s US news partner CBS reported. In its latest update, the Mexican security cabinet said four blockades remained active in Jalisco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The cabinet says 25 people have been arrested, 11 for their alleged participation in violent acts and 14 more for alleged looting and pillaging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Shops were on fire and about 20 bank branches were attacked in the violence, it added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said there was &#8220;absolute co-ordination&#8221; between state and federal officials in response to the violence, urging people to stay &#8220;calm and informed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She added that &#8220;in most parts of the country, activities are proceeding normally&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Several airlines have cancelled flights to Jalisco, including Air Canada, United Airlines and American Airlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The US has warned its citizens to shelter in place in five states: Jalisco, Tamaulipas, areas of Michoac\u00e1n, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK government said &#8220;serious security incidents&#8221;
