{"id":30420,"date":"2026-02-14T06:47:06","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T11:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30420"},"modified":"2026-02-14T06:47:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T11:47:06","slug":"amazons-ring-ends-deal-with-surveillance-firm-after-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2026\/02\/14\/amazons-ring-ends-deal-with-surveillance-firm-after-backlash\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon&#8217;s Ring ends deal with surveillance firm after backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Amazon&#8217;s smart doorbell company is dropping a partnership with a firm known for its surveillance services,<\/b><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">\u00a0<\/b><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">after facing scrutiny over its privacy practices.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The decision cancels a deal announced in October between Amazon&#8217;s Ring and Flock Safety, a firm that operates a network of cameras and license plate readers in the US used primarily by<i class=\"ssrcss-xbdn93-ItalicText e5tfeyi2\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">\u00a0<\/b><\/i>police and law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The agreement would have allowed agencies working with Flock to retrieve video captured on Ring devices, if needed for investigations and allowed by customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The decision not to move forward came days after a Ring advertisement aired during the Super Bowl sparked widespread backlash for being &#8220;creepy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In its announcement, Ring said it had realised that the Flock partnership would have taken up &#8220;significantly more time and resources than anticipated&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It added that the integration of its cameras into Flock&#8217;s systems &#8220;never launched, so no Ring customer videos were ever sent to Flock Safety&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Flock spokesperson said in an email to the BBC that the cancellation of the partnership was &#8220;a mutual decision&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We believe this decision allows both companies to best serve their respective customers and communities,&#8221; the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-vxwoax-ComponentWrapper e1aon0op1\" data-block=\"text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-126h8e-Spacer e1aon0op0\">\n<div data-testid=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-nqezkk-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ring, which was acquired by Amazon in 2018, had previously faced concerns over its privacy policies. As of last year, the company, which has contracts primarily with police agencies, said its cameras and license plate readers were active in over 5,000 US cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Its plans to partner with Ring were announced a day after Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, accused Flock of not doing enough to prevent &#8220;abuse&#8221; of its cameras, citing concerns that they were being used to &#8220;to crack down on immigration and target women under state laws criminalising abortion&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Flock has disputed those reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ring also works with law enforcement.
