While\u00a0Tarrant<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0initially denied all charges and was preparing to stand trial, he entered guilty pleas a year later to 51 charges of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one charge of committing a terrorist \u200cact.<\/p>\n Tarrant told the court his mental health had deteriorated due to harsh prison conditions while he was awaiting trial, and that he was essentially not fit \u200cto plead guilty, according to\u00a0a report in the<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0New Zealand Herald.<\/p>\n “I did not have the mindframe or mental health required to be making informed decisions at that time,” Tarrant said.<\/p>\n “I think the issue is, did I really know what I wanted to do or what would be a good idea?
