{"id":30183,"date":"2025-12-21T08:27:50","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T13:27:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30183"},"modified":"2025-12-21T08:27:50","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T13:27:50","slug":"us-judge-found-guilty-of-helping-migrant-evade-immigration-agents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/12\/21\/us-judge-found-guilty-of-helping-migrant-evade-immigration-agents\/","title":{"rendered":"US judge found guilty of helping migrant evade immigration agents"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A judge in the US state of Wisconsin has been found guilty of obstruction for trying to help a Mexican man evade immigration officials during an arrest attempt.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested in April after ushering Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican national facing misdemeanour battery charges, out of her courtroom through a side door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An immigration judge had issued a warrant for his arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Her conviction marks a win for the Trump administration and its supporters, who have sought to portray the judge&#8217;s actions as indicative of a politicised justice system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Dugan faces up to five years in prison for the obstruction charge, according to US media reports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The judge had pleaded not guilty to charges of obstructing a criminal proceeding and concealing a person from arrest, which the jury found her not guilty for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A sentencing date has not yet been set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On 18 April, Flores-Ruiz had appeared in the Milwaukee court for a scheduled hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Six officers from the FBI, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Drug Enforcement Agency were at the court to arrest him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">According to an FBI affidavit, Dugan became &#8220;visibly angry&#8221; over the type of arrest warrant that had been issued and had told the officers to report to the chief judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">While they were there, Dugan directed Flores-Ruiz and his lawyer to a private exit used for jury members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Still, they did not escape. Immigration agents caught them, and Flores-Ruiz was later deported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;All she did was \u200dsend him \u200cout into the hallway with his lawyer,&#8221; Dugan&#8217;s lawyer, Steven Biskupic, reportedly told the jury during the trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After the conviction, Dugan&#8217;s legal team maintained her innocence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;While we are disappointed in today&#8217;s outcome, the failure of the prosecution to secure convictions on both counts demonstrates the opportunity we have to clear Judge Dugan&#8217;s name and show she did nothing wrong in this matter,&#8221; they said in a statement to US media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Reacting to the news, Deputy US Attorney General Todd Blanche said the judge had &#8220;betrayed her oath&#8221; when she &#8220;obstructed federal law enforcement during an immigration enforcement operation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He wrote on X: &#8220;Today, a federal jury of her peers found her guilty and sent a clear message: the American people respect law and order.
