{"id":30086,"date":"2025-11-28T06:41:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T11:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30086"},"modified":"2025-11-28T06:41:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T11:41:09","slug":"georgia-judge-dismisses-2020-election-interference-case-against-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/11\/28\/georgia-judge-dismisses-2020-election-interference-case-against-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia judge dismisses 2020 election interference case against Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A judge in Georgia has dismissed a sprawling 2020 election interference case against Donald Trump, ending the last effort to prosecute the president for allegedly attempting to overturn his loss to Joe Biden.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Peter Skandalakis, who took over the case\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c77jdk4k717o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after the initial prosecutor&#8217;s removal,<\/a>\u00a0asked Judge Scott McAfee to dismiss the charges on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trump&#8217;s lawyer Steve Sadow praised the decision to end the &#8220;political persecution&#8221; against the president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The dismissal concludes the last of four criminal cases levelled against Trump since he first left the White House, only one of which saw trial and resulted in a conviction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Georgia appeals court\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c77jdk4k717o\">removed Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis<\/a>, a Democrat, from the case after it determined a\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-68038189\">romantic relationship with a special prosecutor<\/a>\u00a0created an &#8220;appearance of impropriety&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Skandalakis, executive director of the non-partisan agency Prosecuting Attorneys&#8217; Council of Georgia, appointed himself to the case after Willis&#8217; disqualification and when other state prosecutors declined to take the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In Wednesday&#8217;s motion to a Fulton County judge, he said he was discontinuing the case &#8220;to serve the interests of justice and promote judicial finality&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;As a former elected official who ran as both a Democrat and a Republican and now is the executive director of a non-partisan agency, this decision is not guided by a desire to advance an agenda but is based on my beliefs and understanding of the law,&#8221; Mr Skandalakis added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Around five million votes for president were cast in Georgia in 2020, with Biden winning the critical swing state by fewer than 12,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trump and some of his allies refused to accept the result, and the state quickly became a focal point for efforts to overturn the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In January 2021, the Washington Post published a recording of Trump speaking to Georgia&#8217;s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state,&#8221; Trump said in the recording.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Willis began investigating Trump&#8217;s activities soon after the report, convening a special grand jury to weigh the evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-66505804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willis filed an indictment &#8211; a formal declaration of charges &#8211; in August 2023<\/a>, alleging Trump conspired with 18 other defendants to interfere in the election result. The charges included racketeering and other state offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The group &#8220;refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and wilfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favour of Trump&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Four co-defendants took plea deals with prosecutors that resulted mostly in fines, suspended sentences and community service, including attorneys Sidney Powell, Kenneth Cheseboro and Jenna Ellis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wednesday&#8217;s dismissal also applies to the remaining co-defendants, including Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor and Trump&#8217;s former attorney, and Mark Meadows, Trump&#8217;s chief of staff during his first presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Sadow, Trump&#8217;s lead attorney in the case, praised the decision to drop the charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The political persecution of President Trump by disqualified DA Fani Willis is finally over,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This case should never have been brought. A fair and impartial prosecutor has put an end to this lawfare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Georgia election interference case was once considered the most threatening of Trump&#8217;s four criminal indictments, because he could not pardon himself from state-level charges if he returned to office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prosecutors brought the US president to the Fulton County Jail,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-66612345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">where they took his mugshot.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Legal experts who closely followed the case were not surprised by its dismissal. A\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy8x8vw4gwpo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">judge tossed out several charges<\/a>\u00a0in 2024 and Willis was disqualified a few months later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Willis&#8217; removal raised doubts about whether a replacement would take up such a complicated prosecution. Trump&#8217;s 2024 election essentially put his case on hold until his term ends in 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It was incredibly unlikely it was going to go forward anyway, because the amount of financial resources and man hours necessary to take on this case didn&#8217;t seem to be within the scope of what Peter Skandalakis had,&#8221; said Anthony Michael Kreis, a professor at the Georgia State College of Law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, Mr Kries was surprised by some of Skandalakis&#8217; reasoning for dropping the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I think the report itself to me is a little more surprising because it seems to give the president and some of his allies a lot of benefit of the doubt, given what the evidence brought forth looked like,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trump has also faced a series of other criminal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">These include a 2024 conviction in\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c9wgzlqwnp2o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a New York hush-money case<\/a>, which he is appealing against.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Two additional federal cases &#8211; one alleging he conspired to overturn the 2020 election and another accusing him of unlawfully retaining classified documents &#8211; were dropped\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4gvd7kxxj5o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">following his return to the White House.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He also faces several high-profile civil lawsuits that are progressing through the appeals courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Earlier this month, Trump\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj0egyzm5yjo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked the US Supreme Court<\/a>\u00a0to review the $5m (\u00a33.6m) civil case brought by writer E Jean Carroll, after a federal appeals court upheld the award and declined to rehear the matter.
