{"id":30083,"date":"2025-11-28T05:34:47","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T10:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30083"},"modified":"2025-11-28T05:34:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T10:34:47","slug":"nicolas-sarkozy-illegal-campaign-financing-conviction-upheld","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/11\/28\/nicolas-sarkozy-illegal-campaign-financing-conviction-upheld\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicolas Sarkozy illegal campaign financing conviction upheld"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">France&#8217;s highest court has upheld a sentence against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy over the illegal financing of his 2012 re-election campaign.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He was found guilty of overspending on his campaign, then hiring a PR firm named Bygmalion to cover it up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sarkozy, 70, was handed the one-year sentence in 2024 of which six months were suspended, meaning they could be served by wearing an electronic tag instead of going to jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He has always denied all allegations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prosecutors in the case said Sarkozy&#8217;s UMP party spent nearly double the \u20ac22.5m (\u00a319.4m) cap on his campaign, splurging on lavish campaign rallies and events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">To hide the costs, UMP then asked Bygmalion to invoice the party, rather than the campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Today&#8217;s is the second definitive conviction for the former president, who was in power from 2007 to 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last December the High Court of Appeal upheld a corruption conviction and Sarkozy had to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet for six months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Then, in September, he was sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He spent 20 days in jail before he was released earlier in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An appeal trial will be held next year. Until then Sarkozy will be subject to strict judicial supervision and barred from leaving France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Days after his release, Sarkozy&#8217;s team announced the former president was writing a book about his three weeks in jail, titled &#8220;A prisoner&#8217;s diary&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An excerpt from the book was published on social media: &#8220;In prison there is nothing to see, and nothing to do. I forget the silence that does not exist at La Sant\u00e9 [prison], where there is much to listen to. Here, the noise is, unfortunately, constant.
