{"id":30008,"date":"2025-11-17T04:46:39","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T09:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=30008"},"modified":"2025-11-17T05:22:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T10:22:07","slug":"ousted-former-bangladesh-pm-sheikh-hasina-sentenced-to-death-for-crimes-against-humanity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/11\/17\/ousted-former-bangladesh-pm-sheikh-hasina-sentenced-to-death-for-crimes-against-humanity\/","title":{"rendered":"Ousted former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina sentenced to death for crimes against humanity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh&#8217;s ousted prime minister, has been sentenced to death after being convicted of crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>It follows a months-long trial in the country that found her guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising last year.<\/p>\n<p>The former leader, exiled in India, was tried in absentia after the United Nations said up to 1,400 people may have been killed in the violence.<\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh&#8217;s health adviser under the interim government said more than 800 people were killed and about 14,000 were injured.<\/p>\n<p>Hasina, who previously called the tribunal a &#8220;kangaroo court&#8221;,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/bangladesh-prime-minister-resigns-after-deadly-protests-reports-13191184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fled to India in August 2024<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0at the height of the uprising, ending 15 years of rule.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released after the verdict, Hasina said the ruling was &#8220;biased and politically motivated&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am not afraid to face my accusers in a proper tribunal where evidence can be weighed and tested fairly,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>The 78-year-old is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led the country to independence.<\/p>\n<p>The International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh&#8217;s domestic war crimes court located in the capital Dhaka, delivered its verdict amid tight security.<\/p>\n<p>Hasina received a life sentence under charges for crimes against humanity and the death sentence for the killing of several people during the uprising.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict, which was broadcast live on state television, can be appealed in the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The packed courtroom cheered and clapped when the sentence was read out.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling is the most dramatic legal action against a former Bangladeshi leader since independence in 1971 and comes ahead of parliamentary elections expected to be held in February.<\/p>\n<p>Paramilitary border guards and police have been deployed in Dhaka and many other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after Hasina&#8217;s Awami League party called for a nationwide shutdown as part of a protest against the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>The mood in the country had been described as tense ahead of Monday&#8217;s verdict.<\/p>\n<p>At least 30 crude bomb explosions and 26 vehicles were torched across Bangladesh during the past few days.<\/p>\n<p>Hasina is also the aunt of former UK government minister, Tulip Saddiq, who resigned from her Treasury job at the start of this year.<\/p>\n<p>She had faced calls to step down over links to her aunt and was also said to be\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/what-is-former-minister-tulip-siddiq-on-trial-for-in-bangladesh-13288115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facing a corruption trial<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Siddiq told Sky News in August the accusations were &#8220;nothing more than a farce&#8221; and said she had never been contacted by the Bangladeshi authorities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Sky News\" width=\"100\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ousted-former-bangladesh-pm-sheikh-hasina-convicted-of-crimes-against-humanity-13471521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news.sky.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh&#8217;s ousted prime minister, has been sentenced to death after being convicted of crimes against humanity.
