{"id":29947,"date":"2025-10-31T06:01:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T10:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29947"},"modified":"2025-10-31T06:01:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T10:01:14","slug":"south-africa-court-rules-apartheid-police-assault-killed-nobel-laureate-albert-luthuli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/31\/south-africa-court-rules-apartheid-police-assault-killed-nobel-laureate-albert-luthuli\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa court rules Apartheid police assault killed Nobel laureate Albert Luthuli"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A South African court has ruled that Nobel laureate Albert Luthuli&#8217;s 1967 death was the result of an &#8220;assault&#8221; by apartheid police, overturning decades of claims that it was an accident.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An inquest held under the apartheid government concluded that Luthuli, the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize, died after being struck by a freight train while walking along a railway line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But activists and his family had long cast doubt on the findings, and South Africa&#8217;s government reopened the case this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A judge on Thursday ruled that the anti-apartheid hero died as a result of a fractured skull and a cerebral haemorrhage associated with an assault. His family has welcomed the judgement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Luthuli, who at the time of his death was the leader of the then-banned African National Congress (ANC), won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for spearheading the fight against apartheid.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-h5qd1q-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp8yz0e22dro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ghosts of apartheid haunt South Africa as compensation anger brews<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-64941144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Africa&#8217;s long wait for justice over apartheid crimes<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The ANC went on to lead the struggle against white-minority rule and came to power in 1994, following the first democratic elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">South Africa&#8217;s National Prosecuting Authority in April\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvg87q6q9d3o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reopened fresh investigations into Luthuli&#8217;s death<\/a>\u00a0as family and activists suspected the apartheid authorities had killed him and covered it up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Delivering the judgment on Thursday, Judge Nompumelelo Radebe said evidence presented at the reopened inquest did not support the 1967 inquest findings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It is found that the deceased died as a result of a fractured skull, cerebral haemorrhage and concussion of the brain associated with an assault,&#8221; Judge Nompumelelo ruled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The judge said Luthuli&#8217;s death was attributable to &#8220;assault by members of the security special branch of the South African police, acting in concert and in common purpose with employees of the South African Railway Company&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She named seven men, whose whereabouts could &#8220;not be ascertained&#8221;, as having committed or being complicit in the murder. If found, they could face criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After the judgment was read out, the Luthuli family&#8217;s spokesperson called it &#8220;the first part of finally getting justice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu also welcomed the court&#8217;s decision, which she said &#8220;corrected a long-standing distortion of history&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This ruling brings justice, truth and dignity to the memory of one of South Africa&#8217;s greatest sons and to all those who suffered under apartheid brutality,&#8221; Bhengu added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The case at the Pietermaritzburg High Court is the latest in renewed efforts by South African authorities to deliver justice for victims of apartheid-era crimes and closure for their families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last month, South Africa prosecutors\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c931n9eelpeo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reopened the inquest into the death of anti-apartheid leader Steve Biko<\/a>, who died in police custody in 1977 after being tortured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In May, President Cyril Ramaphosa\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepresidency.gov.za\/president-cyril-ramaphosa-establishes-commission-inquiry-delay-investigation-and-prosecution-trc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">established a judicial commission of inquiry to look into allegations of improper influence<\/a>\u00a0in delaying or hindering the investigation and prosecution of apartheid-era crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c874yqvdr13o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A South African court has ruled that Nobel laureate Albert Luthuli&#8217;s 1967 death was the result of an &#8220;assault&#8221; by apartheid police, overturning decades of claims that it was an accident.
