{"id":29818,"date":"2025-09-24T05:55:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T09:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29818"},"modified":"2025-09-24T05:55:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T09:55:08","slug":"three-west-african-countries-to-quit-international-criminal-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/09\/24\/three-west-african-countries-to-quit-international-criminal-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Three West African countries to quit International Criminal Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have announced they will immediately withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), labelling it an &#8220;instrument of neo-colonialist repression&#8221;.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The three military-led countries issued a joint statement, saying they would not recognise the authority of the UN-backed court, based in The Hague.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The ICC has proven itself incapable of handling and prosecuting proven war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of genocide, and crimes of aggression,&#8221; the three leaders said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The court has not yet responded to the decision by the three countries, all of which with close ties to Russia whose leader Vladimir Putin has been subject to an ICC arrest warrant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The three states said they wanted to set up &#8220;indigenous mechanisms for the consolidation of peace and justice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They accused the ICC of targeting less privileged countries, echoing criticism from Rwanda&#8217;s President Paul Kagame who has previously accused the ICC of holding an anti-African bias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The ICC was set up in 2002 to legally pursue cases of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Out of\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">33 cases launched since its inception<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">,\u00a0external<\/span><\/a>, all but one involved an African country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A country&#8217;s withdrawal from the ICC officially takes effect one year after the UN is notified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Military junta forces are in control of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, following coups in the Sahel countries between 2020 and 2023. They make up the only three members of the Confederation of Sahel States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Their armies have faced accusations of crimes against civilians, as violence has escalated in the region against jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In another coordinated move earlier this year, all three countries simulatenously withdrew from the regional bloc, the\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5yvd91j72eo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Economic Community of West African States<\/a>\u00a0(Ecowas).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They had rejected Ecowas&#8217; demands for them to restore democratic rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Russia has strengthened its ties with the three Sahel countries over recent years, which have all become increasingly isolated from the West, notably the former regional colonial power France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2023, the ICC issued an\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"http:\/\/bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-64992727\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrest warrant for Russia&#8217;s President Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u00a0over alleged war crimes in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/czjvp0pr3eko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have announced they will immediately withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), labelling it an &#8220;instrument of neo-colonialist repression&#8221;.
