{"id":29770,"date":"2025-09-01T08:34:41","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T12:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29770"},"modified":"2025-09-01T08:34:41","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T12:34:41","slug":"mob-burns-nigerian-woman-to-death-for-alleged-blasphemy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/09\/01\/mob-burns-nigerian-woman-to-death-for-alleged-blasphemy\/","title":{"rendered":"Mob burns Nigerian woman to death for alleged blasphemy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A woman has been burnt to death by a mob in northern Nigeria&#8217;s Niger state after she was accused of blaspheming against Prophet Muhammad, police have said.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Police condemned the killing of the woman &#8211; identified in local media as a food vendor named Amaye &#8211; as &#8220;jungle justice&#8221;, saying that an investigation was under way to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Local media quoted eyewitnesses as saying a man jokingly proposed marriage to the vendor, and her response was considered blasphemous by some people in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack, and [she] was set ablaze before a reinforcement of security teams could arrive at the scene,&#8221; state police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-suhx0k-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5p6v2-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He appealed to members of the public to remain calm and not to take the law into their own hands following the killing on Saturday in Kasuwan-Garba town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Such killings are not uncommon in northern Nigeria, where blasphemy is regarded as a criminal offence under Islamic (Sharia) law, which operates alongside secular law in 12 mainly Muslim states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At least two other people have been lynched over such accusations in the last three years, with critics pointing out that not enough is being done to prevent the killings that have targeted both Muslims and Christians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2022,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-61450976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">student Deborah Samuel was beaten and burned alive<\/a>\u00a0in Sokoto state after being accused of making blasphemous comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last year, a butcher, Usman Buda, was stoned to death in the same state under similar circumstances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Though Nigeria&#8217;s constitution upholds freedom of speech, the country remains deeply divided on matters of faith and justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nigeria&#8217;s Supreme Court has in the past ruled that blasphemy allegations must be proven in a court of law.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5y21zxyd6mo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A woman has been burnt to death by a mob in northern Nigeria&#8217;s Niger state after she was accused of blaspheming against Prophet Muhammad, police have said.
