The\u00a0New York<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0mayoral election is set for 4 November, with incumbent Eric Adams running as an independent despite being voted in as a Democrat.<\/p>\n Speaking after his release, Mr Lander said “I am just fine” and “lost a button” from his shirt, but added the defendant “ripped” from his arms “doesn’t have a lawyer” and will be held in an ICE detention centre.<\/p>\n “I believe it is important to show up and bear witness and accompany people,” he said. “So I am going to keep coming here week after week.”<\/p>\n In a statement, US Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Mr Lander “was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer”. Mr Lander denies this.<\/p>\n Sky News’ US partner network\u00a0NBC News<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reported that Ms Barnette said at a press conference: “This is not the way we deal with the rule of law, this is not the way people are treated in the United States.<\/p>\n “I feel really rattled and scared, and my husband is a candidate for mayor, is an elected citywide official, is a US citizen.”<\/p>\n Zohran Mamdani, a New York assemblyman and a fellow candidate in the Democratic primaries, shared the video of Mr Lander’s arrest and said: “NYC Comptroller Brad Lander was just arrested by Trump’s ICE agents because he asked to see a judicial warrant.<\/p>\n “This is fascism and all New Yorkers must speak in one voice. Release him now.”<\/p>\n Former governor Andrew Cuomo, also running in the primary, added: “This is the latest example of the extreme thuggery of Trump’s ICE out of control – one can only imagine the fear families across our country feel when confronted with ICE.”<\/p>\n It comes after\u00a0New Jersey mayor Ras Baraka was arrested<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on a trespassing charge outside a federal immigration detention centre in his city in May.<\/p>\n He was released hours later, and charges were later dropped by the interim attorney for the state.
