{"id":29381,"date":"2025-05-17T09:53:36","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T13:53:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29381"},"modified":"2025-05-17T09:53:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T13:53:36","slug":"colombian-police-arrest-suspect-in-peru-mine-workers-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/05\/17\/colombian-police-arrest-suspect-in-peru-mine-workers-killings\/","title":{"rendered":"Colombian police arrest suspect in Peru mine workers&#8217; killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Police in Colombia<\/b><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">\u00a0<\/b><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">have arrested a man suspected of being involved in the killing of 13 kidnapped workers at a gold mine in neighbouring Peru.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Miguel Antonio Rodr\u00edguez D\u00edaz, whose alias is &#8220;Cuchillo&#8221; (knife), was arrested in the city of Medellin in a joint operation between the two countries and Interpol, according to Peru&#8217;s interior ministry and Colombian police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The bodies of the miners were recovered on 4 May from a tunnel at a mine in the Pataz district of Peru.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A lawyer for Mr Diaz has denied his involvement in the killings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Peru is one of the largest gold producers in Latin America and has seen a surge in violence from illegal miners and organised criminal gangs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 13 men killed in Pataz had been sent to confront a group which had attacked and occupied the mine but were ambushed and seized as they were trying to regain control of it, Peruvian authorities said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Diaz is suspected of allegedly ordering the storming of the mine&#8217;s entrance, with the aim of stealing gold extracted by miners,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/institucion\/mininter\/noticias\/1168019-coordinacion-entre-policia-nacional-de-peru-y-colombia-permitio-captura-de-alias-cuchillo-presunto-autor-de-la-masacre-en-pataz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peru&#8217;s interior ministry said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He is accused of &#8220;organised crime, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated homicide&#8221;, it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A video posted by authorities showed him being detained by armed police in a busy downtown area of Medellin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Colombian police chief Carlos Triana said Mr Diaz was located with the support of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and was subject to an Interpol red notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Peru&#8217;s interior ministry<b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">\u00a0<\/b>said they expected Mr Diaz to be extradited to Peru in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">La Poderosa, which owns the mine where the murders took place, previously said 39 people with links to the company have been killed by criminal gangs in Pataz in total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This most recent attack prompted Peru&#8217;s President Dina Boluarte to impose a night-time curfew in Pataz and to suspend mining activities for a month.
