suspending habeas corpus &#8211; the right of a person to challenge their detention in court &#8211; one of the US president&#8217;s top aides has said.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, told reporters on Friday that the US Constitution allowed for the legal liberty to be suspended in times of &#8220;rebellion or invasion&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His comments come as judges have sought to challenge some recent detentions made by the Trump administration in an effort to combat illegal immigration, as well as remove dissenting foreign students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;A lot of it depends on whether the courts do the right thing or not,&#8221; Miller said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There are several pending civil cases against the Trump administration&#8217;s deportation of undocumented migrants based on habeaus corpus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Most recently, a federal judge\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp3nd0dwlpgo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered the release of a Turkish university student<\/a>\u00a0who had been detained for six weeks after writing an article that was critical of Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last week, another judge ordered\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c98gvp76l50o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Columbia University student detained over his advocacy for Palestinians<\/a>\u00a0be released after a petition on habeas corpus grounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, other judges have\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cwy0ngd11yzo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sided with the Trump administration<\/a>\u00a0in such disputes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Miller described habeas corpus as a &#8220;privilege&#8221;, and said Congress had already passed a law stripping judicial courts of jurisdiction over immigration cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Legal experts have questioned the veracity of his interpretation of US law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">One of Trump&#8217;s key campaign pledges was to deport millions of immigrants from the US, and his administration has pursued different means of expediting deportations since returning to the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In March, a federal judge&#8217;s order prevented the Trump administration from invoking a centuries-old wartime law\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp9yv1gnzyvo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to justify deporting more than 200 Venezuelans, despite the flights going ahead.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But deportations have lagged behind detentions &#8211; while one person has been deported erroneously.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1le81vw-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/resources\/idt-17e9c07b-93f4-45b3-9558-7590b9eaf3ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump&#8217;s first 100 days in office<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">CNN reported, citing unnamed sources, that Trump was personally involved in the discussions around suspending habeas corpus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trump himself has not mentioned the suspension of habeas corpus, but has said he would take steps to combat injunctions against his actions on deportation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1le81vw-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/p0l59sd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Listen: The President&#8217;s Path: Doubling Down on Deportations<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;There are ways to mitigate it and there&#8217;s some very strong ways,&#8221; he said in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;There&#8217;s one way that&#8217;s been used by three very highly respected presidents, but we hope we don&#8217;t have to go that route.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Habeas corpus &#8211;
