{"id":29287,"date":"2025-04-29T05:09:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T09:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29287"},"modified":"2025-04-29T05:09:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T09:09:07","slug":"sex-offenders-to-be-denied-asylum-rights-in-new-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/04\/29\/sex-offenders-to-be-denied-asylum-rights-in-new-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex offenders to be denied asylum rights in new law"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Asylum seekers will be denied the right to stay in the UK if they have been convicted of sexual offences, the government has announced.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Terrorists, war criminals and any other criminals whose offences carry a sentence of one year or more can already be refused asylum under the Refugee Convention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Under the changes, this will be extended to anyone convicted in the UK of a crime which places them on the sex offenders register, regardless of the length of their sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said this would &#8220;ensure these appalling crimes are taken seriously&#8221; but the Conservatives said the measures were &#8220;too little, too late&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The changes will be introduced through an amendment to the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which is currently making its way through Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-12l5xzx-LinksComponentWrapper e3eyuya0\" data-component=\"links-block\">\n<section class=\"ssrcss-msolhr-LinksWrapper e3eyuya5\">\n<ul class=\"ssrcss-1y914pf-InContentLinksGrid e3eyuya3\" role=\"list\">\n<li class=\"ssrcss-r2yl4r-PromoItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1t3sjik-Promo e1vyq2e80\" data-testid=\"promo\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-oxzfb3-PromoCompact e18gnqux0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1d68cot-PromoContent exn3ah912\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1f3bvyz-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1sen9vx-PromoHeadline exn3ah99\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cddyj8ge08po\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Government considering sending failed asylum seekers to Balkans<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ssrcss-r2yl4r-PromoItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1t3sjik-Promo e1vyq2e80\" data-testid=\"promo\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-oxzfb3-PromoCompact e18gnqux0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1d68cot-PromoContent exn3ah912\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1f3bvyz-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1sen9vx-PromoHeadline exn3ah99\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn4837w4z2vo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Nearly 42,000 UK asylum seekers waiting on appeal<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ssrcss-r2yl4r-PromoItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1t3sjik-Promo e1vyq2e80\" data-testid=\"promo\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-oxzfb3-PromoCompact e18gnqux0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1d68cot-PromoContent exn3ah912\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1f3bvyz-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1sen9vx-PromoHeadline exn3ah99\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvgeg5gp4dno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Union and bishops criticise small boat refugee citizenship ban<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is not clear how many cases the change could affect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, a Home Office source said ministers would be hoping to tackle instances like that of\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-68179839\">Abdul Ezedi<\/a>, who was granted asylum despite being a convicted sex offender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ezedi killed himself within hours after he was suspected of dousing his ex-girlfriend with a corrosive liquid when he attacked her and her children in south London in January last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He was already on the sex offenders register, after pleading guilty to charges of sexual assault and exposure in 2018, when he was granted asylum in 2020 following two failed attempts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The amendment will also set a 24-week target for appeal decisions on whether asylum seekers who are foreign offenders or are in government-funded accommodation have the right to remain in the UK or not, in a bid to cut the asylum backlog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The home secretary said: &#8220;Sex offenders who pose a risk to the community should not be allowed to benefit from refugee protections in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Nor should asylum seekers be stuck in hotels at the taxpayers&#8217; expense during lengthy legal battles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;That is why we are changing the law to help clear the backlog, end the use of asylum hotels and save billions of pounds for the taxpayer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Home Office said that harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) for processing asylum claims could also save up to an hour per case by summarising interview transcripts and accessing country advice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A range of measures to reform the asylum system are being introduced, including new powers for the Immigration Advice Authority to issue fines of up to \u00a315,000 for anyone involved in advising fraudulent claims or posing as an immigration lawyer who is not registered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There will also be restrictions on foreign offenders living in the community, including mandatory electronic tags, strict night-time curfews and enforced exclusion zones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, welcomed efforts to resolve asylum cases quickly, but warned the use of AI could &#8220;backfire&#8221; if it produced flawed decisions that end up in the courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Law Society of England and Wales also raised concerns that the target for appeal decisions would be &#8220;unworkable&#8221; in practice as the justice system is already struggling to cope with current demand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips said the action would complement the government&#8217;s pledge to halve violence against women and girls in a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the legislation was &#8220;too little, too late&#8221; and highlighted how\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx206ln4ke8o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a record 10,000 people had crossed the Channel this year already<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Foreign criminals pose a danger to British citizens and must be removed, but so often this is frustrated by spurious legal claims based on human rights claims, not asylum claims,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The Conservatives had already tabled tough, clear reforms to remove all foreign criminals and to disapply the Human Rights Act so activists and lawyers cannot block deportations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;But Labour voted against our measures &#8211;
