{"id":29268,"date":"2025-04-25T07:44:31","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T11:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29268"},"modified":"2025-04-25T07:44:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T11:44:31","slug":"cyclists-who-kill-could-face-life-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/04\/25\/cyclists-who-kill-could-face-life-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyclists who kill could face life sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Cyclists who kill pedestrians by acting dangerously on the road could face life imprisonment under a proposed change to the law.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Currently, cycling offenders can be imprisoned for no more than two years under an 1861 law originally intended for drivers of horse-drawn carriages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A government<b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">\u00a0<\/b>amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill &#8211; which is currently going through Parliament &#8211; would see cycling offences brought in line with driving offences, the Department for Transport (DfT) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The changes would also mean serious injury caused by dangerous cycling &#8211; or death by careless or inconsiderate cycling &#8211; could incur punishments of five years in jail, fines, or both.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A serious injury caused by careless or inconsiderate cycling would result in a two-year sentence, a fine or both under the proposed changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The government estimates that of 1,600 deaths on UK roads last year, four were caused by cyclists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A DfT spokesperson said updating the more than 160-year-old legislation would &#8220;ensure that the tiny minority who recklessly disregard others face the full force of the law&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They added: &#8220;Dangerous cycling is completely unacceptable, and the safety of our roads is a key priority for this government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill &#8211; which is currently at the committee stage &#8211; will be debated by Parliament in &#8220;due course&#8221;, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1w03aro-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Under the previous government,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-69016715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservative MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith campaigned to amend another bill<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the Criminal Justice Bill &#8211; to hold cyclists accountable for reckless behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He cited campaigning by\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-41034492\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew Briggs<\/a>, whose wife, Kim, died from head injuries after a collision with a cyclist in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Charlie Alliston &#8211; who was riding a fixed-gear bike with no front brakes &#8211; was cleared of manslaughter and found guilty of causing bodily harm by &#8220;wanton or furious driving&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Briggs told BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Today programme at the time that he wanted to &#8220;try and stop another family having to go through what we have had to go through&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His campaign welcomed Friday&#8217;s news, writing on X: &#8220;After nine years of campaigning and a few false starts, it looks like we might finally be there!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A government source close to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the BBC that changing the law &#8220;at the first opportunity&#8221;
