{"id":29151,"date":"2025-03-27T06:16:27","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T10:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29151"},"modified":"2025-03-27T06:16:27","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T10:16:27","slug":"south-sudan-vp-machar-under-house-arrest-his-party-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/03\/27\/south-sudan-vp-machar-under-house-arrest-his-party-says\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan VP Machar under house arrest, his party says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">South Sudan&#8217;s First Vice-President Riek Machar, a long-time rival of the country&#8217;s President Salva Kiir, has been placed under house arrest, his party says.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An armed convoy led by top security officials, including the defence minister, entered Machar&#8217;s residence in the capital, Juba, and disarmed his bodyguards late on Wednesday, said the Sudan People&#8217;s Liberation Movement In Opposition (SPLM\/IO).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Technically, Dr Machar is under house arrest, but the security officials initially tried to take him away,&#8221; said Reath Muoch Tang, chairman of the party&#8217;s foreign relations committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The government is yet to comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UN has been warning that South Sudan is on the brink of a return to civil war following an escalation of conflict between Machar and the president that has been building for weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The two leaders agreed in August 2018 to end a five-year civil war that killed nearly 400,000 people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1le81vw-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ce8yr42r96do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN fears war as barrel bombs dropped in South Sudan<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But over the last seven years their relationship has become increasingly strained amid ethnic tensions and sporadic violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The SPLM\/IO said Machar was detained alongside his wife Angelina Teny, who is also the country&#8217;s interior minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;An arrest warrant was delivered to him under unclear charges,&#8221; Tang said in a statement, calling the action a &#8220;blatant violation of the constitution and the Revitalized Peace Agreement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The arrest of the first vice-president without due process undermines the rule of law and threatens the stability of the nation,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UN mission in South Sudan has warned that the the world&#8217;s newest nation risked losing the &#8220;hard-won gains of the past seven years&#8221; if it returned to &#8220;a state of war&#8221;, following reports of Machar&#8217;s detention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Tonight, the country&#8217;s leaders stand on the brink of relapsing into widespread conflict,&#8221; the mission <a href=\"https:\/\/unmiss.unmissions.org\/unmiss-calls-immediate-recommitment-peace-pivotal-moment-south-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Violations of the 2018 peace deal &#8220;will not only devastate South Sudan but also affect the entire region,&#8221;
