{"id":29060,"date":"2025-03-05T07:53:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T12:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29060"},"modified":"2025-03-05T07:54:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T12:54:42","slug":"co-op-unlawfully-blocked-100-rival-store-openings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/03\/05\/co-op-unlawfully-blocked-100-rival-store-openings\/","title":{"rendered":"Co-op unlawfully blocked 100 rival store openings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">The Co-op has admitted to unlawfully blocking more than 100 rival supermarkets from opening branches near to its stores.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK&#8217;s competition watchdog found Co-op had breached an order which limits supermarkets&#8217; ability to prevent nearby land being used by rival retailers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Blocking other grocers from opening nearby hits competition between supermarkets and means shoppers have less choice when trying to get cheaper prices, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A spokesperson for Co-op said: &#8220;This is a matter we take very seriously, and we have taken all necessary action to ensure this issue is resolved and does not happen again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Co-op admitted 107 breaches of the Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010. It has re-written 104 agreements and agreed to resolve three others, the CMA said.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/67c6eff4750837d7604dbe24\/List_of_affected_locations.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It released a list of the 107 locations<\/a>\u00a0in England, Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Co-op&#8217;s spokesperson added: &#8220;As a business that is committed to operating fairly, we recognise this is extremely disappointing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Co-op owns almost 2,400 stores across the UK and holds a 5.2% market share in the UK&#8217;s \u00a3190.9bn supermarket industry, according to the CMA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The chain said the number of breaches amounted to &#8220;less than 2% of transactions&#8221; across its property portfolio, which includes its supermarkets and funeral directors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Many of the UK&#8217;s biggest supermarkets have also breached the land order in recent years, but not to the extent that Co-op was found to in the CMA&#8217;s latest action.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1le81vw-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Tesco 23 breaches in 2020<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Waitrose 7 breaches in 2022<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sainsbury&#8217;s 18 breaches in 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Asda 14 breaches in 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Morrisons 55 breaches in 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Marks and Spencer 10 breaches in 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Daniel Turnbull, senior director of markets at the CMA said: &#8220;Restrictive agreements by our leading retailers affect competition between supermarkets and impact shoppers trying to get the best deals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The order bans new restrictive covenants which prohibit land being used for a supermarket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It also bans exclusivity arrangements which prevent landlords from allowing stores to compete with an existing supermarket which were over five years long.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5y2gwwnd0wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The Co-op has admitted to unlawfully blocking more than 100 rival supermarkets from opening branches near to its stores.
