{"id":29037,"date":"2025-03-04T05:40:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T10:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=29037"},"modified":"2025-03-04T05:40:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T10:40:00","slug":"robert-crimo-iii-pleads-guilty-to-killing-seven-people-in-chicago-independence-day-parade-mass-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/03\/04\/robert-crimo-iii-pleads-guilty-to-killing-seven-people-in-chicago-independence-day-parade-mass-shooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Crimo III pleads guilty to killing seven people in Chicago Independence Day parade mass shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A man has pleaded guilty to killing seven people when he opened fire on an Independence Day parade in Chicago in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Robert E Crimo III, 24, had pleaded not guilty to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/gunman-suspected-of-killing-six-at-fourth-of-july-parade-in-chicago-arrested-12645959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the shooting<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; but changed his plea just moments before opening statements at his trial.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors originally charged Crimo with 21 counts of first-degree murder, three for each person killed, and 48 counts of attempted murder.<\/p>\n<p>They dropped 48 less serious counts of aggravated battery before jury selection last week.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Victoria Rossetti read the charges to Crimo and asked questions to ensure he understood before his new plea was read to the court today in Lake County,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/illinois-5725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He mostly gave one-word answers and indicated he understood the charges.<\/p>\n<p>The plea change means the trial &#8211; which had been expected to last a month &#8211; will not go ahead, the judge told the court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He has knowingly and voluntarily waived those rights and pleaded guilty,&#8221; Rossetti said.<\/p>\n<p>The proceedings were briefly interrupted as the defendant&#8217;s mother had a brief outburst at her son&#8217;s plea change.
