{"id":28982,"date":"2025-02-24T08:47:31","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T13:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28982"},"modified":"2025-02-24T08:47:31","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T13:47:31","slug":"mp-mike-amesbury-jailed-for-punching-constituent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/02\/24\/mp-mike-amesbury-jailed-for-punching-constituent\/","title":{"rendered":"MP Mike Amesbury jailed for punching constituent"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Suspended Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been jailed for 10 weeks after he admitted punching a man to the ground in his Cheshire constituency.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Amesbury, 55, who represents Runcorn and Helsby as an independent MP, pleaded guilty to assaulting 45-year-old Paul Fellows after video footage emerged showing the confrontation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He had his Labour whip removed after the incident in Frodsham, Cheshire, which happened in the early hours of 26 October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sitting at Chester Magistrates&#8217; Court, Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram said a pre-sentence report showed Amesbury&#8217;s actions were the result of a &#8220;anger and loss of emotional control&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Amesbury was taken down to the cells immediately and an application for bail pending an appeal was refused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/cx2rnp29p7xt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addressing the MP before handing down the jail term<\/a>, the magistrate said: &#8220;I have to say that I have seen a single punch to the head cause fatal injuries, but note the limited injuries in this case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I note that you, Mr Amesbury, continued to punch Mr Fellows when he was on the ground and continued to shout at Mr Fellows. I consider this more culpable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You continued to attack when he was on the ground and it may have continued further had a bystander not intervened,&#8221; the magistrate said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You continued to rant, your position ought to be as a role model to others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-19w8cxh-ComponentWrapper-HeadlineComponentWrapper egtrm1f0\" data-component=\"subheadline-block\">\n<h2 id=\"Unprovoked-drunken-behaviour\" class=\"ssrcss-pbttu9-Heading e10rt3ze0\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span role=\"text\">&#8216;Unprovoked drunken behaviour&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Passing sentence, the magistrate said the immediate custodial sentence was &#8220;necessary both as a punishment and a deterrent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said he accepted the incident was one incident &#8220;in an otherwise unblemished career&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You have spent your life in public service and served in high office&#8221;, he told Amesbury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the magistrate said he was of &#8220;the view that unprovoked drunken behaviour is too serious to be dealt with unpaid work&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Ikram said he had also considered how the MP was &#8220;unlikely to re-offend&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But he said: &#8220;You were only stopped from going further by members of the public.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Richard Derby, representing Amesbury, asked the magistrate: &#8220;Is that an immediate sentence?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Ikram nodded and replied: &#8220;Yes,&#8221; before leaving the courtroom, having told the MP he must also pay the victim&#8217;s costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Amesbury was joined in the dock by two security guards who took him down to the cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">From there, he was set to be taken to HMP Altcourse in Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Derby requested the judge come back into court as he wished to make an application for bail for Amesbury, pending an appeal against his sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Ikram returned to court, sat down, paused briefly, and said: &#8220;Application refused.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cjd3nr4rr5lo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Suspended Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been jailed for 10 weeks after he admitted punching a man to the ground in his Cheshire constituency.
