{"id":28943,"date":"2025-02-09T10:17:57","date_gmt":"2025-02-09T15:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28943"},"modified":"2025-02-09T10:17:57","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T15:17:57","slug":"mandatory-jail-for-nazi-salutes-under-new-australia-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/02\/09\/mandatory-jail-for-nazi-salutes-under-new-australia-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory jail for Nazi salutes under new Australia laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Hate symbols and terror offences will be punishable with mandatory jail terms ranging from one to six years in Australia, after parliament passed a series of amendments to hate crime laws on Thursday.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The new laws were passed following a wave of high-profile antisemitic attacks which have become a major topic of debate in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The amendments have been described by the government as the &#8220;toughest laws Australia has ever had against hate crimes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But critics say that the governing Labor Party is caving to opposition demands and going against its own policy of opposing mandatory jail sentences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Under the amendments, displaying hate symbols or performing a Nazi salute is now punishable with at least one year in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Other penalties include a minimum of three years for financing terrorism and six years for committing or planning terrorist acts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There have been several attacks on Jewish targets in Australia in recent months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last week authorities in Sydney\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckgn1dd6g1po\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found a caravan<\/a>\u00a0containing explosives and an antisemitic note.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The discovery came just a week after a childcare centre near a Jewish school and synagogue in Sydney was\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c8057j0mz5mo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set on fire<\/a>\u00a0and antisemitic graffiti was seen on one of its walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In December, a synagogue in Melbourne was\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5ydr228jyko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set alight with worshippers inside<\/a>. No-one was seriously hurt in the incident, which sent shockwaves through the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Former Labor senator Kim Carr criticised the party for what he said was a &#8220;clear breach of the Labor party national platform&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Labor opposes mandatory sentences on the grounds that such penalties do not reduce crime, undermine the courts&#8217; independence and are often discriminatory in practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But opposition parties did not rush to welcome the new amendments either, accusing Labor of dragging its feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The parliament is not acting today because of the decisiveness of the Labor Party,&#8221; Liberal senator James Paterson told reporters in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The prime minister has been dragged kicking and screaming to finally introduce tough legislation that will ensure there are real penalties for this behaviour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Performing the Nazi salute and displaying Nazi symbols such as the swastika, have been banned since January 2024 and carry up to one year in jail.
