{"id":28921,"date":"2025-01-31T06:48:42","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T11:48:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28921"},"modified":"2025-01-31T06:48:42","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T11:48:42","slug":"australian-police-find-explosives-for-possible-antisemitic-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/01\/31\/australian-police-find-explosives-for-possible-antisemitic-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian police find explosives for possible antisemitic attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Authorities in Sydney are investigating whether explosives discovered in a caravan were intended for an antisemitic attack.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The explosives could have caused a 40m-wide blast and &#8220;significant damage,&#8221; police said on Wednesday, adding that the threat was contained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A note was found in the caravan that displayed antisemitic messages, investigators said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This is the discovery of a potential mass casualty event,&#8221; New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson told a news conference that the caravan was discovered on 19 January in Dural, a suburb of north-west Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The investigation became public on Wednesday after details of it were leaked to the media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There was &#8220;some indication that the explosives might be used in some form of antisemitic attack,&#8221; Mr Hudson said, but he wouldn&#8217;t be drawn on the possible target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said officers had &#8220;mitigated the risk as much as possible&#8221; but stressed: &#8220;I&#8217;m not saying it&#8217;s been eliminated. I&#8217;m saying it&#8217;s been mitigated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;That&#8217;s one of the reasons we&#8217;re talking today, for members of the public to be vigilant in relation to what they see and what they hear in relation to antisemitism in our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An investigation involving the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has been launched.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Thursday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told ABC Radio Sydney the threat was &#8220;clearly designed to harm people&#8221; and &#8220;create fear in the community&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said he agreed with Premier Chris Minns in describing it as &#8220;terrorism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It has not yet been designated as terrorism by NSW Police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Earlier, Albanese said that New South Wales Police had &#8220;people in custody&#8221; and was working with the AFP taskforce investigating antisemitic crimes called Special Operation Avalite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Minns said the threat would be &#8220;met with the full resources of the government&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The discovery follows a spate of antisemitic attacks in Australia in recent months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Thursday, police said a Jewish school in Sydney&#8217;s eastern suburbs had been vandalised with antisemitic graffiti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In December, worshippers were forced to flee as Melbourne&#8217;s Adass Israel synagogue was\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5ydr228jyko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set on fire.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Earlier this month, a childcare centre in Sydney was\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c8057j0mz5mo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set alight and sprayed with antisemitic messages.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckgn1dd6g1po\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Authorities in Sydney are investigating whether explosives discovered in a caravan were intended for an antisemitic attack.
