{"id":28840,"date":"2025-01-11T10:49:11","date_gmt":"2025-01-11T15:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28840"},"modified":"2025-01-11T10:54:53","modified_gmt":"2025-01-11T15:54:53","slug":"us-announces-25m-reward-for-arrest-of-venezuelas-maduro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2025\/01\/11\/us-announces-25m-reward-for-arrest-of-venezuelas-maduro\/","title":{"rendered":"US announces $25m reward for arrest of Venezuela&#8217;s Maduro"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">The US has announced an increased $25m (\u00a320.4m) reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro on the day he was sworn in for a third six-year term in office.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The inauguration ceremony was overshadowed by recrimination from the international community and Venezuelan opposition leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Rewards have also been offered for information leading to the arrest and or conviction of Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello. A new reward of up to $15m for Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino has also been offered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK also issued sanctions on 15 top Venezuelan officials, including judges, members of the security forces and military officials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said those sanctioned were responsible for &#8220;undermining democracy, the rule of law, and human rights violations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Foreign Secretary David Lammy went on to describe Maduro&#8217;s regime as &#8220;fraudulent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Also on Friday, the EU said it was extending &#8220;restrictive measures&#8221; against Venezuela because of &#8220;the lack of progress&#8230; leading to the restoration of democracy and the rule of law&#8221;. The bloc also sanctioned a further 15 Venezuelan officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Canada also imposed fresh sanctions in what Foreign Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly called Maduro&#8217;s &#8220;shameless actions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Joly said Canada &#8220;will not tolerate the erosion of the democratic process or the repression of citizens seeking to express their rights&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Maduro and his government have repeatedly denounced many of the allegations made by Western countries and opposition leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The reward from the US cites narcotics and corruption charges dating back to 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2020,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-52053799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the US charged Maduro, and other senior officials<\/a>\u00a0in the country with &#8220;narco-terrorism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It accused them of flooding the US with cocaine and using drugs as a weapon to undermine the health of Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Maduro has rejected the accusations. The US also re-imposed oil sanctions last year, after temporarily easing them in the hope Maduro could be incentivised to hold free and fair elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Venezuelan president has blamed an economic collapse in his country on US-led sanctions he calls illegitimate and imperial. His critics blame corruption and economic mismanagement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Friday, President Maduro took the oath of office, vowing his third six-year term in office would be a &#8220;period of peace&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This new presidential term will be the period of peace, prosperity, equality, and the new democracy,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I swear by history, I swear by my life, and I will fulfil it,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 28 July election results were widely rejected by the international community, including by Brazil and Colombia, some of Venezuela&#8217;s left-wing neighbours.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The inauguration itself was a tightly controlled affair. Most accredited Venezuelan media were not allowed inside and foreign journalists were not allowed in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Maduro has a few allies remaining including Iran, China and Russia but is increasingly isolated on the world stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Cuban and Nicaraguan presidents were the only leaders present at the inauguration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 62-year-old was declared the winner of last July&#8217;s presidential election but the opposition and many countries, including the US, rejected the result and recognised the exiled opposition candidate Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez as the legitimate president-elect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Gonz\u00e1lez fled Venezuela in September and has been living in Spain, but this month he went on a tour of the Americas to rally international support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Maduro government has issued an arrest warrant for him, offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his detention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Friday, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for the release of all who have been &#8220;arbitrarily detained&#8221; since the elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><i class=\"ssrcss-xbdn93-ItalicText e5tfeyi2\">Additional reporting by Vanessa Silva in Caracas, Venezuela.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4g9ezyw0keo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The US has announced an increased $25m (\u00a320.4m) reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro on the day he was sworn in for a third six-year term in office.
