of the probation service enabled his killer to strike again.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Brian Whitelock, 57, has been given a whole life sentence, meaning he will never be considered for parole,<b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">\u00a0<\/b><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn5wv94639qo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for the drug-fuelled and &#8220;brutal&#8221; says neighbour in 999 call<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ssrcss-r2yl4r-PromoItem e3eyuya1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-s1qr4x-Promo e1vyq2e80\" data-testid=\"promo\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1enzf19-PromoCompact e18gnqux0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1d68cot-PromoContent exn3ah99\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1f3bvyz-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1sen9vx-PromoHeadline exn3ah96\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx2yzp7mpepo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">The women killed by men in Wales since 2020<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Probation Service said it was also conducting its own review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Whole life orders are reserved for the most severe cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-66573067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nurse Lucy Letby<\/a>, April Jones killer Mark Bridger and Wayne Couzens, who\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-62345010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">murdered Sarah Everard while he was a police officer<\/a>, were all given whole life orders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sentencing Whitelock at Swansea Crown Court, Judge Mr Justice Griffiths called the murder in August 2022 a &#8220;frenzy of violence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;[Wendy] knew what you were doing to her. Her injuries included injuries to her hands while she tried to defend herself, but of course she was no match for you,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You described it as torture, and that&#8217;s what it was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added: &#8220;You described her as like a second mother to you. She deserved nothing but gratitude, but you brutally murdered her anyway and you have never, ever suggested a motive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wendy&#8217;s family were joined in court for the sentencing by the families of Whitelock&#8217;s previous victims, Nicky Morgan and Glen Whitelock. Nine of the 12 jurors from his trial also returned to see him sentenced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a victim impact statement read in court, Wendy Buckney&#8217;s sister Ann said Wendy knew about Whitelock&#8217;s past but had given him odd jobs to do around her flat because she felt he deserved a &#8220;second chance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Applause broke out in the court room when the whole life sentence was handed down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><i class=\"ssrcss-xbdn93-ItalicText e5tfeyi2\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Warning: This article contains details that some people might find distressing.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ann said her family cannot stop thinking about the day Wendy was killed and whether she was frightened, or &#8220;begging him to stop&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She said: &#8220;He has not just taken one life. The broken shelves matched bruises found on Wendy&#8217;s body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wendy was naked, and Whitelock&#8217;s DNA was found on her underwear. It was the prosecution&#8217;s case that\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4gzvl9n3v1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he had also sexually assaulted her<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He admitted to Wendy&#8217;s murder at the scene of his crime but in court, where he represented himself, he claimed manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx2nqn7g028o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying his actions were caused by a head injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the prosecution rejected that claim, saying the combined effects of alcohol and a &#8220;fixation&#8221;
