{"id":28719,"date":"2024-12-01T06:16:19","date_gmt":"2024-12-01T11:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28719"},"modified":"2024-12-01T06:16:19","modified_gmt":"2024-12-01T11:16:19","slug":"hitman-offered-71000-for-canadian-reporters-assassination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/12\/01\/hitman-offered-71000-for-canadian-reporters-assassination\/","title":{"rendered":"Hitman offered $71,000 for Canadian reporter&#8217;s assassination"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A hitman offered C$100,000 ($71,400; \u00a356,000) for the assassination of a crime reporter at Montreal newspaper La Presse, the outlet has reported.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Convicted killer Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rick Silva confessed to La Presse that he had offered the contract to anyone willing to carry out the hit on Daniel Renaud, who was covering his trial for three murders and an attempted murder in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Silva was convicted in 2022 and became a police informant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Quebec Premier Fran\u00e7ois Legault condemned the plot. &#8220;It makes no sense that in Quebec \u2013 we are not in a movie \u2013 there is a contract placed on the head of a journalist because he does his job,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This is not the Quebec we want,&#8221; he said, adding that the province&#8217;s police must continue to target organised crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In order to become an informant for the authorities, Silva had to confess his entire criminal history, La Presse reported. The outlet said it had learned of the plot against Mr Renaud after reviewing the confession Silva had made to police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Silva admitted to contacting two influential organised crime figures about assassinating Mr Renaud while being held on trial in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">According to Silva, the figures were hesitant, saying it was a bad idea to target a journalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The &#8220;contract&#8221; was in place for roughly two months, but was never carried out, La Presse reported. Silva eventually cancelled the order, he said, because he had &#8220;more important issues to deal with&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Silva is now serving a life sentence in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Renaud told La Presse he was &#8220;shaken&#8221; by the revelations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t censor myself, but I always exercise restraint so I don\u2019t reveal details about the private lives of criminals and avoid putting lives in danger.
