{"id":28371,"date":"2024-10-05T04:55:33","date_gmt":"2024-10-05T08:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28371"},"modified":"2024-10-05T04:55:33","modified_gmt":"2024-10-05T08:55:33","slug":"serial-rapist-in-south-africa-gets-42-life-sentences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/10\/05\/serial-rapist-in-south-africa-gets-42-life-sentences\/","title":{"rendered":"Serial rapist in South Africa gets 42 life sentences"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Warning: This story contains distressing details from the start.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A South African serial rapist &#8211; who assaulted children as young as nine years old &#8211; has received 42 life sentences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nkosinathi Phakathi was convicted of 90 counts of rape &#8211; attacks that he carried out between 2012 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 40-year-old sometimes made children watch him raping his victims and also forced young boys to rape their female friends, South Africa&#8217;s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Phakathi&#8217;s crimes took place in or around Ekurhuleni, a municipality just east of the city of Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Friday, the Johannesburg High Court heard that Phakathi was receiving 42 life sentences for charges including rape, kidnapping, theft and assault.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-49606146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sexual violence in South Africa: &#8216;I was raped, now I fear for my daughters&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Often, multiple life sentences arise in the most serious cases involving numerous victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The NPA said the judge agreed that Phakathi had shown \u201cno remorse and was beyond rehabilitation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The majority of Phakathi&#8217;s victims were schoolchildren, the youngest being a nine-year-old girl, the NPA&#8217;s statement said. His oldest victim was aged 44.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The NPA said Phakathi targeted many of these individuals when they were travelling to or from work or school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Phakathi also assaulted some of his victims in their own homes, pretending to be an electrician coming to fix a household appliance in order to gain entry, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Phakathi lost his leg after being shot by police during his arrest in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He attended Friday&#8217;s sentencing on crutches, wearing a blue tracksuit and face mask.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">South Africa suffers from a soaring violent crime rate, with rape and murder rampant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There were more than 9,300 rapes between April and June this year, up by 0.6% compared to the same period last year, police data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5ywjv1k4vqo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Warning: This story contains distressing details from the start.
