{"id":28354,"date":"2024-10-02T06:48:56","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T10:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28354"},"modified":"2024-10-02T06:48:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T10:48:56","slug":"surgeon-operated-with-penknife-he-uses-to-cut-up-lunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/10\/02\/surgeon-operated-with-penknife-he-uses-to-cut-up-lunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Surgeon operated with penknife he uses to cut up lunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A surgeon at a crisis-hit NHS trust used a Swiss Army penknife to open up the chest of a patient because he claimed he could not find a sterile scalpel.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">University Hospitals Sussex has said the operation was an emergency, but the surgeon\u2019s actions were \u201coutside normal procedures and should not have been necessary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prof Graeme Poston, an expert witness on clinical negligence and a former consultant surgeon, told the BBC: \u201cIt surprises me and appals me. Firstly, a penknife is not sterile. Secondly it is not an operating instrument. And thirdly all the kit [must have been] there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Police are separately looking into at least 105 cases of alleged medical negligence at the trust and considering manslaughter charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The surgeon in the penknife case, who the BBC is not naming, was operating on a patient at the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton when he struggled to find a scalpel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Instead he used a Swiss Army knife which he normally used to cut fruit for his lunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The patient survived but internal documents show the surgeon\u2019s colleagues felt his behaviour was \u201cquestionable\u201d and were \u201cvery surprised\u201d he was unable to find a scalpel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The BBC has also discovered the same surgeon carried out three supposedly low-risk operations in two months where all three patients died soon after.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The BBC has previously reported that:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Four whistleblowers said\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-67600907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">patients had died unnecessarily<\/a>\u00a0and been \u201ceffectively maimed\u201d at the trust<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A former surgeon claimed a\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c1vw50n04kqo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cgang culture\u201d<\/a>\u00a0existed in the neurosurgery department. The same doctor alleged one surgeon had disproportionate deaths and a second did complex operations without adequate training<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An internal review conceded doctors\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-sussex-67934233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could have saved the life<\/a>\u00a0of student Melissa Zoglie had they acted sooner<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sussex Police has\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckgj2glj97lo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recruited extra staff<\/a>\u00a0as part of its manslaughter probe concerning the trust<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Royal College of Surgeons\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-sussex-68206681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review found a \u201cculture of fear\u201d<\/a>\u00a0at the trust and suggested senior managers may need to be replaced<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The trust lost a nine-month legal battle with the BBC and The Times to block access to and redact documents in two employment tribunal cases<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The trust launched a series of internal investigations into the three patients who died &#8211; and concluded that they had experienced \u201cpoor care\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It also conceded one woman who died \u201cwould have survived if there were no post-operative complications\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The woman\u2019s daughter, who asked not to be identified, said: \u201cWe didn\u2019t understand how mum died. No one seemed to know why the operation was not successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cThere needs to be a thorough investigation into these deaths, not just an action plan. The trust\u2019s position did not change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">University Hospitals Sussex said the decision to move the surgeries had included \u201ca thorough process\u2026 with oversight from the executive team\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In response to the wider police investigation of the trust, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: \u201cWe are aware of concerning reports currently under investigation by Sussex Police and our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cIt is vital police officers are given the space and support to properly investigate these matters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Sussex Police has confirmed University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is cooperating fully with this investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-19w8cxh-ComponentWrapper-HeadlineComponentWrapper egtrm1f0\" data-component=\"subheadline-block\">\n<h2 id=\"Sincere-sympathies\" class=\"ssrcss-pbttu9-Heading e10rt3ze0\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span role=\"text\">&#8216;Sincere sympathies&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Dr Findlay said: \u201cI want to reassure all of our patients and staff that in each of the cases outlined in this report, thorough investigations took place, and action was taken whenever necessary to ensure lessons were learnt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cWe were in touch with these families to express our sincere sympathies for their loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cIf we ever fall short of the standards people have a right to expect, then we are open, honest, and move swiftly to make improvements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said the trust faced a number of long-standing challenges, and its teams were working hard to address them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cI am proud of the progress they have made and they will be supported to make the further improvements we know are necessary,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c62g7ed3qzxo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A surgeon at a crisis-hit NHS trust used a Swiss Army penknife to open up the chest of a patient because he claimed he could not find a sterile scalpel.
