{"id":28269,"date":"2024-09-04T04:57:56","date_gmt":"2024-09-04T08:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28269"},"modified":"2024-09-04T04:57:56","modified_gmt":"2024-09-04T08:57:56","slug":"british-man-baffled-by-nigeria-declaring-him-a-top-fugitive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/09\/04\/british-man-baffled-by-nigeria-declaring-him-a-top-fugitive\/","title":{"rendered":"British man baffled by Nigeria declaring him a top fugitive"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A British national has said he is at a loss as to why the Nigerian police have accused him of planning to overthrow Nigeria\u2019s government and placed a bounty on his head.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was alleged by Nigeria\u2019s police spokesperson on Monday that Andrew Wynne &#8211; and a co-conspirator &#8211; had built up a network of sleeper cells to destabilise Nigeria and had fled the country in the wake of last month\u2019s cost-of-living protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Speaking from the UK, Mr Wynne told Nigeria\u2019s Channels Television he was not aware of accusations and would be happy to talk to officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said he ran a bookshop in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, and had been visiting the West African nation for 25 years without any problems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A reward of 10m naira ($6,000, \u00a35,000) has been offered by Nigeria\u2019s police to anyone who has information that could lead to the arrest of Mr Wynne \u2013 and the same amount for his alleged Nigerian accomplice Lucky Obiyan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cl7yrnwly4ro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Nigerians planned &#8216;days of rage&#8217; over hardships<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-68402662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Nigeria&#8217;s economy is in such a mess<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cI am more than happy to talk with the police; I am more than happy to have a discussion on WhatsApp or Zoom; I am more than happy to go to London and meet with officials from the Nigerian High Commission,\u201d said Mr Wynne, who is also known by the name Andrew Povich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He was declared a fugitive on the day that\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c0mn24xp443o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 Nigerians were charged with treason\u00a0<\/a>for taking part in the protests that were dubbed \u201c10 days of rage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">These demonstrations were mainly organised via social media but also had the backing of the country\u2019s trade unions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">All of those who were accused on Monday in the federal high court of treason, destruction of public property and injuring police officers pleaded not guilty. Their charge sheet also alleged that they had been working with Mr Wynne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Later, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi gave more details about Mr Wynne, saying he had rented a space at Abuja\u2019s Labour House, the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) &#8211; the country\u2019s main trade union body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He also said the British national had established a school to cover up his activities &#8211; working towards the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu\u2019s government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cI am not aware that I am a fugitive; I am not aware that I am running away from the law,\u201d Mr Wynne told Channels TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cI have had a bookshop at the NLC offices right at the centre of Abuja for seven years and all that time, of course the security forces have paid no interest in me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The August demonstrations turned violent in some places as protesters clashed with security forces leaving at least seven dead, according to police, though rights groups have put the death toll at 23.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/crrlpr8xd71o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A British national has said he is at a loss as to why the Nigerian police have accused him of planning to overthrow Nigeria\u2019s government and placed a bounty on his head.
