{"id":28145,"date":"2024-08-01T10:21:31","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T14:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28145"},"modified":"2024-08-04T11:34:27","modified_gmt":"2024-08-04T15:34:27","slug":"three-men-accused-of-plotting-9-11-attacks-on-the-us-have-entered-into-a-pre-trial-plea-deal-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/08\/01\/three-men-accused-of-plotting-9-11-attacks-on-the-us-have-entered-into-a-pre-trial-plea-deal-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"Three men accused of plotting 9\/11 attacks on the US have entered into a pre-trial plea deal agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Three of the men accused of plotting the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US have entered into a pre-trial agreement, the Department of Defense says.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al-Hawsawi have been held at the US Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for years without going to trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Details of the deal have not been announced, but US news outlets say the men will plead guilty in exchange for the prosecution agreeing not to seek the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has revoked a pre-trial agreement reached with men accused of plotting the 11 September 2001 attacks.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><strong>In a memo, Mr Austin also said he was revoking the authority of the officer overseeing the military court who signed the agreement on Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><strong>The original deal, which would reportedly have spared the alleged attackers the death penalty, was criticised by some families of victims.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nearly 3,000 people in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania were killed in the attacks, which sparked the &#8220;War on Terror&#8221; and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Brett Eagleson, the president of 9\/11 Justice, an organisation that represents 9\/11 survivors and relatives of victims, said in a statement provided to the BBC that the families are \u201cdeeply troubled by these plea deals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said the process lacked transparency and urged the authorities to pursue more information on the role of Saudi Arabia in the attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Terry Strada, who lost her husband Tom, told the BBC\u2019s Today Programme: &#8220;It was a gut-punch to hear that there was a plea deal today that was giving the detainees in Guantanamo Bay what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ms Strada, the national chair of the campaign group 9\/11 Families United, added: &#8220;This is a victory for Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and the other two, it&#8217;s a victory for them,&#8221; simulated drowning &#8211; at least 183 times before the practice was banned by the US government.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-58527700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a courtroom just feet away from 9\/11 suspects<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The trial has been delayed for so long partly because of fears that the so-called brutal interrogation techniques which critics say amounted to torture could have undermined the evidence against the detainees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cThis is the least bad deal in the real world that would ever happen,\u201d national security analyst Peter Bergen told CNN.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In September, the Biden administration reportedly rejected the terms of a plea deal with five men held at the US Navy base in Cuba, including Mohammed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The men had reportedly sought a guarantee from the president that they would not be kept in solitary confinement and would have access to trauma treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The White House National Security Council said that the president&#8217;s office was told on Wednesday of the new deal and had played no role in negotiations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Fifteen of the 19 plane hijackers were Saudi nationals and families are bringing a lawsuit against the kingdom, which denies any involvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Republicans were quick to attack the Biden administration for striking a deal with the accused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell condemned the move as &#8220;a revolting abdication of the government&#8217;s responsibility to defend America and provide justice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The only thing worse than negotiating with terrorists is negotiating with them after they are in custody,&#8221;
