His daughter told the BBC he died on Thursday afternoon \u201cdue to complications from sepsis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Van Schoor\u2019s death came less than a week after a BBC investigation into his past, which exposed horrific new details about a series of killings he carried out in the late 1980s during the final years of white-minority rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The sister of one of his victims has told the BBC she hopes the police will re-open the cases for investigation despite his death.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At a time when the racist apartheid system imposed a strict hierarchy that privileged white South Africans, Van Schoor was operating as a private security guard in the coastal city of East London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Between 1986 and 1989, he shot and killed at least 39 people. All of his victims were black and the youngest was just 12 years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c51yqdy3q61o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mass killer who \u2018hunted\u2019 black people says police encouraged him<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 1991, Van Schoor was arrested and later convicted on seven charges of murder, but he was released on parole after serving just 12 years in jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At least 32 of his killings are still classified as \u201cjustifiable homicides\u201d by the police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In his lifetime, Van Schoor claimed that all his victims were criminals who he caught \u201cred-handed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He relied on apartheid-era laws that gave people the right to use lethal force against intruders to maintain his innocence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the BBC\u2019s report raised serious questions about these so-called \u201cjustifiable\u201d shootings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It included extensive interviews with Van Schoor in which he described his activities as \u201cexciting\u201d and \u201chunting\u201d, and where he made a series of allegations about the involvement of the police in his activities in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The BBC also reviewed long-forgotten archival documents, including witness statements by multiple survivors of Van Schoor&#8217;s shootings, who gave graphic accounts of him gunning them down after they had surrendered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cHe picked me up and propped me up against a table and then he shot me again,\u201d said one survivor, who was 14 years old at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There is no statute of limitations for murder in South Africa and many relatives of victims still have hopes of launching criminal or civil lawsuits in pursuit of justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Marlene Mvumbi, whose brother Edward was killed by Van Schoor in 1986, was shocked to hear of his sudden death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cHe got off easy!\u201d she said. \u201cI hope they still re-open these cases. The families deserve justice. We got nothing and the pain is still the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2021, Van Schoor had both his legs partially amputated following circulatory complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His hospitalisation a month ago, in the same East London hospital where many of his victims were taken, was due to an infection in the remains of one of his limbs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sepsis develops when the body&#8217;s immune system overreacts to an infection and starts attacking its own tissues and organs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Van Schoor\u2019s family said his condition deteriorated rapidly once sepsis set in, despite the best efforts of hospital staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In his final interview with the BBC, Van Schoor denied that he was a \u201cserial killer\u201d, but also said he had \u201cno remorse\u201d and \u201cno guilt\u201d for his past actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Isa Jacobson, a journalist and filmmaker who has spent 20 years investigating his case, says it is essential that killers from the apartheid era continue to be scrutinised &#8211; before it is too late.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cI think that we only know a small percentage of the killings that occurred in this country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cPeople that hold the truth in their minds are dying\u2026 The longer we wait, the harder it will be to have that truth revealed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/m0021dvm#xtor=CS8-1000-%5BEditorialPromo_Box%5D-%5BNewsEditorial_Promo%5D-%5BNewsEditorial_Promo%5D-%5BPS_IPLAYER~N~~P_EyeTheApartheidKiller%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">The Apartheid Killer<\/b><\/a><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">,<\/b>\u00a0watch on iPlayer (UK only)<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Outside the UK, watch on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QPB42_uLLh0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC Africa YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cd1r45kme45o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Louis van Schoor, a convicted mass murderer in South Africa known as the \u201cApartheid Killer\u201d, has died.
