{"id":28008,"date":"2024-07-05T04:53:25","date_gmt":"2024-07-05T08:53:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=28008"},"modified":"2024-07-05T04:53:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T08:53:25","slug":"ghana-chef-accused-of-faking-guinness-world-records-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/07\/05\/ghana-chef-accused-of-faking-guinness-world-records-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana chef accused of faking Guinness World Records award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A Ghanaian chef who claimed to have broken the world record for the longest non-stop cooking by an individual has been arrested over a dispute with his sponsor.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ebenezer Smith held a press conference on Tuesday announcing he was the new world-record holder after cooking continuously for 802 hours and 25 minutes &#8211; more than a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He presented a certificate purportedly from Guinness World Records (GWR) confirmed him as the record holder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But on Wednesday, a GWR spokesperson told BBC Pidgin the claims were &#8220;not true&#8221; and added that it was &#8220;not our certificate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In another response to a Ghanaian media outlet, GWR also explained they were not aware of his attempt and that they did not receive an application from him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The chef was arrested by the police shortly after announcing his purported award, over a dispute with his sponsor, the Amadia Shopping Centre, Spintex, in the capital Accra, where he held his cooking marathon in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They accused him of breaching a contractual agreement by not informing them about the new developments regarding the alleged confirmation of the award.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-66194990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Guinness World Record mania has gripped Nigeria<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Many Ghanaians have expressed shock and disappointment on social media about the case, which was widely covered when Mr Smith claimed to have broken the record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The chef, who is still in police custody and has not been charged yet, has not commented on the accusations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His unsuccessful record attempt earlier this year attracted the support of several local celebrities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Several Ghanaians have attempted to break Guinness World Records in recent times, including media personality and entrepreneur Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, who attempted the longest singing marathon last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Earlier this year another chef, Failatu Abdul Razak, attempted the longest cooking marathon in the northern city of Tamale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The current record for longest cooking marathon by an individual is held by Ireland&#8217;s Alan Fisher at 119 hours, 57 minutes 16 seconds from 28 September-3 October last year, GWR said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It had previously been held by Nigerian chef Hilda Bacci, whose record stood at 93 hours 11 minutes.
