{"id":27988,"date":"2024-07-03T04:30:59","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T08:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=27988"},"modified":"2024-07-03T04:30:59","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T08:30:59","slug":"child-marriage-ban-welcomed-in-sierra-leone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/07\/03\/child-marriage-ban-welcomed-in-sierra-leone\/","title":{"rendered":"Child marriage ban welcomed in Sierra Leone"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Sierra Leone has brought in a new law banning child marriage with much fanfare at a ceremony organised by First Lady Fatima Bio in the capital, Freetown.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Invited guests, including first ladies from Cape Verde and Namibia, watched as her husband President Julius Maada Bio signed the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act into law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Anybody now involved in the marriage of a girl aged under the age of 18 will be jailed for at least 15 years or fined around $ 4,000 (\u00a33,200), or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">University student Khadijatu Barrie, whose sister was married off at 14, told the BBC she welcomed the ban but wished it had come in to save her younger sibling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cI really wish it had happened earlier. I could have at least saved my sister and my friends and other neighbours,\u201d the 26-year-old gender studies undergraduate said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sierra Leone is a patriarchal society and it is common for a father to give his daughter\u2019s hand in marriage forcibly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ms Barrie faced this prospect aged 10.
