{"id":27919,"date":"2024-06-19T03:05:03","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T07:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=27919"},"modified":"2024-06-24T06:11:57","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T10:11:57","slug":"uks-richest-family-on-trial-in-switzerland-for-human-trafficking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/06\/19\/uks-richest-family-on-trial-in-switzerland-for-human-trafficking\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s richest family on trial in Switzerland for human trafficking"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Four members of the UK&#8217;s richest family are on trial in Switzerland amid allegations they spent more money caring for their dog than their servants.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Hinduja family, worth an estimated \u00a337bn ($47bn), is accused of exploitation and human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:\u00a0<\/strong><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Four members of the UK&#8217;s richest family have received prison sentences for exploiting staff brought over from India to work at their Geneva villa.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><strong>Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, as well as their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, were found guilty of exploitation and illegal employment by a Swiss court and handed sentences ranging from four to four-and-a-half years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><strong>They were acquitted on the more serious charge of human trafficking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The family own a villa in Geneva\u2019s wealthy neighbourhood of Cologny, and the charges against them all relate to their practice of importing servants from India to look after their children and household.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It\u2019s alleged that Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, together with their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, confiscated staff passports, paid them as little as $8 (\u00a37) for 18-hour days, and allowed them little freedom to leave the house.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Although a financial settlement over exploitation was reached last week, the Hindujas remain on trial for trafficking, which is a serious criminal offence in Switzerland. They deny the charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This week in court, one of Geneva\u2019s most famous prosecutors, Yves Bertossa, compared the almost $10,000 a year he claimed the family had spent on their dog, to the daily amount they were allegedly paying their servants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Hinduja family&#8217;s lawyers did not specifically deny the allegations of low wages, but said they must be viewed in context &#8211; noting that the staff were also receiving accommodation and food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The charge of long hours was also disputed, with one defence lawyer arguing that watching a film with the Hinduja children could not really be classed as work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Some former servants testified for the Hindujas, describing them as a friendly family who treated their servants with dignity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the allegations that servants\u2019 passports were confiscated, and that they could not even leave the house without permission, are serious, because they could be judged as human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Bertossa is calling for prison terms, and millions of dollars in compensation as well as legal fees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-19w8cxh-ComponentWrapper-HeadlineComponentWrapper egtrm1f0\" data-component=\"subheadline-block\">\n<h2 id=\"Dark-side-of-Geneva\" class=\"ssrcss-1ipj56t-Heading e10rt3ze0\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span role=\"text\">Dark side of Geneva<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is not the first time that Geneva, a hub for international organisations as well as the world\u2019s wealthy, has been in the spotlight over the alleged mistreatment of servants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2008,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-14646524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hannibal Gaddafi<\/a>, son of Libya\u2019s former dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was arrested in his five star Geneva hotel by police acting on information that he and his wife had been beating their servants, including with a coat hanger.
