{"id":27899,"date":"2024-06-16T04:56:33","date_gmt":"2024-06-16T08:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=27899"},"modified":"2024-06-16T04:56:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-16T08:56:33","slug":"iranian-convicted-of-war-crimes-freed-in-swedish-swap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/06\/16\/iranian-convicted-of-war-crimes-freed-in-swedish-swap\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian convicted of war crimes freed in Swedish swap"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">An Iranian convicted in Sweden of war crimes has been freed as part of a prisoner swap between the two countries.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Hamid Noury, who was serving a life sentence, has returned to Tehran while Johan Floderus, a Swedish diplomat and dual national Saeed Azizi arrived back in Stockholm late on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Noury was arrested in Sweden in 2019 and convicted of involvement in the mass execution of political prisoners in Iran more than three decades ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Floderus was detained in Iran two years ago on charges of spying while Mr Azizi was arrested last November and sentenced to five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Relations between Sweden and Iran have deteriorated since Mr Noury&#8217;s conviction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Announcing the swap,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.regeringen.se\/uttalanden\/2024\/06\/uttalanden-av-statsminister-ulf-kristersson-med-anledning-av-att-johan-floderus-och-saeed-azizi-ar-pa-vag-hem-till-sverige\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden&#8217;s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said<\/a><span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <\/span>Iran had made Mr Floderus and Mr Azizi &#8220;both pawns in a cynical negotiation game, with the aim of getting Iranian citizen Hamid Noury \u200b\u200breleased from prison in Sweden&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added: &#8220;He is convicted of serious crimes committed in Iran in the 1980s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Kazem Gharibabadi, secretary of Iran&#8217;s High Council for Human Rights,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Gharibabadi\/status\/1801931699921502571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a post on X, formerly Twitter,<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday that Mr Noury had been &#8220;illegally detained&#8221; in Sweden but was now free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Noury was accused of committing war crimes and murder in 1988 when, according to Swedish prosecutors, he was assistant to the deputy prosecutor at Gohardasht prison in Karaj.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He was the first person to face prosecution for participating in the execution of thousands of prisoners, which Iran&#8217;s establishment has never formally acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 1988, the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), an Iraqi-backed leftist opposition group, had attacked Iran during the Iran and Iraq War.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-15dlehh-PromoHeadline exn3ah96\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/crgg8m3pgk7o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">French citizen returns home freed by Iran<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-15dlehh-PromoHeadline exn3ah96\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c1rr0178rzeo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Iran fuels 2023 global executions rise &#8211; Amnesty<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-15dlehh-PromoHeadline exn3ah96\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-62162676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Sweden court convicts Iranian over 1988 executions<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Iran&#8217;s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued an order to execute all prisoners who were loyal to or sympathised with the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Human rights groups estimate that between 2,800 and 5,000 women and men were executed at sites, including Gohardasht prison, between July and September 1988.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Noury, 63, was arrested after arriving at Stockholm airport on a flight from Iran.
