{"id":27642,"date":"2024-05-01T06:28:22","date_gmt":"2024-05-01T10:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=27642"},"modified":"2024-05-01T06:28:22","modified_gmt":"2024-05-01T10:28:22","slug":"us-plans-to-reclassify-cannabis-as-less-dangerous-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/05\/01\/us-plans-to-reclassify-cannabis-as-less-dangerous-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"US plans to reclassify cannabis as less dangerous drug"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US is planning to reclassify cannabis as a less dangerous drug in an historic shift that could have a significant impact across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Drug Enforcement Administration&#8217;s (DEA) proposal would recognise the drug&#8217;s medical properties and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than other dangerous substances.<\/p>\n<p>However the proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House, would not legalise\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/cannabis-6558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>cannabis<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0outright for recreational use.<\/p>\n<p>Marijuana is currently classified in the US as a &#8220;schedule one&#8221; substance, alongside heroin and LSD, which is reserved for drugs with a high potential for abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The US Department of Justice, which oversees the DEA, recommended cannabis be switched to &#8220;schedule three&#8221;, meaning it has a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence, and putting the drug in the same bracket as ketamine and some anabolic steroids.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after US President Joe Biden called for a review of the federal marijuana law in October 2022 and announced\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/joe-biden-to-pardon-thousands-of-americans-convicted-of-possessing-cannabis-12713953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a pardon for thousands of Americans<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0convicted of possessing cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Mr Biden said: &#8220;Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana.
