{"id":27273,"date":"2024-02-24T05:18:11","date_gmt":"2024-02-24T10:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=27273"},"modified":"2024-02-24T05:34:20","modified_gmt":"2024-02-24T10:34:20","slug":"germany-legalises-possession-of-cannabis-for-personal-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/02\/24\/germany-legalises-possession-of-cannabis-for-personal-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany legalises possession of Cannabis for personal use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The German parliament has approved controversial plans to legalise the personal use of cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>The measure was passed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/germany-5934\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Germany&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0lower house, the Bundestag, on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>From 1 April, adults will be able to buy up to 25 grams (one ounce) of the drug a day, or up to 50 grams (two ounces) per month for recreational use.<\/p>\n<p>The figure will be capped at 30 grams a month for under-21s.<\/p>\n<p>Users will also be able to grow up to three plants each for private consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s upper house, which represents 16 state governments, could in principle delay the legislation, though it does not formally require the chamber&#8217;s approval.<\/p>\n<p>Bavaria&#8217;s conservative state government has also said it would examine whether legal action could be taken to halt the law.<\/p>\n<p>The plans, part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/olaf-scholz-9879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>German Chancellor Olaf Scholz&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0social reform programme, passed by 407 votes to 226 on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The measures were previously scheduled to become law at the start of the year, but got held up following resistance from some lawmakers in Mr Scholz&#8217;s ruling three-party coalition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/02\/768x432\/skynews-karl-lauterbach-minister-of-health_6466801.jpg?20240223171047\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/02\/384x216\/skynews-karl-lauterbach-minister-of-health_6466801.jpg?20240223171047 380w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/02\/768x432\/skynews-karl-lauterbach-minister-of-health_6466801.jpg?20240223171047 760w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/02\/1600x900\/skynews-karl-lauterbach-minister-of-health_6466801.jpg?20240223171047 1024w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/02\/2048x1152\/skynews-karl-lauterbach-minister-of-health_6466801.jpg?20240223171047 2048w\" alt=\"Health minister Karl Lauterbach during the debate on legalising cannabis. Pic: AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Health minister Karl Lauterbach said: &#8220;We have two goals: to crack down on the black market and improved protection of children and young people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said that Germany&#8217;s current laws had failed, as usage is growing and the country is facing increasing problems from contaminated or overly-concentrated batches. You can stick your head in the sand&#8230; but we won&#8217;t solve a single problem that way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The minister said research suggested the best approach to managing the drug was to remove its social taboos and ensure users are informed about the risks.<\/p>\n<p>However, Conservative lawmaker Tino Sorge, a member of Germany&#8217;s centre-right opposition, attacked the plans.<\/p>\n<p>The Christian Democrat legislator said: &#8220;You are asserting in all seriousness that, by legalising more\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/drugs-6216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drugs<\/a><\/strong>, we will contain drug use among young people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is the most stupid thing I&#8217;ve ever heard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The measures also allow German residents aged 18 and over to join non-profit &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/cannabis-6558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>cannabis<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0clubs,&#8221; with a maximum of 500 members each, which can grow the drug for their members&#8217; personal use only from 1 July.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new legislation, dealers caught selling to children or youths could be jailed for up to two years.<\/p>\n<p>Advertising and sponsorships featuring the drug will also be banned, along with smoking it near schools, playgrounds and sports facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The plans are less radical than the government&#8217;s original proposals, to allow cannabis to be sold to adults at licensed outlets, which were watered down following discussions with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Germany becomes the ninth country to legalise recreational use of the drug, while many more allow its medical use as a painkiller.<\/p>\n<p>Source: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Sky News\" width=\"100\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/cannabis-germany-legalises-possession-of-drug-for-personal-use-13079241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news.sky.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The German parliament has approved controversial plans to legalise the personal use of cannabis.
