{"id":26976,"date":"2024-01-14T04:20:11","date_gmt":"2024-01-14T09:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=26976"},"modified":"2024-01-14T04:20:11","modified_gmt":"2024-01-14T09:20:11","slug":"donald-trump-ordered-to-pay-ny-times-nearly-400000-in-legal-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2024\/01\/14\/donald-trump-ordered-to-pay-ny-times-nearly-400000-in-legal-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump ordered to pay NY Times nearly $400,000 in legal costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p><strong> Former President Donald Trump is expected\u00a0 to win the Iowa caucuses and is widely expected to be the Republican presidential nominee this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Meanwhile, Donald Trump has just been ordered to pay the New York Times nearly $400,000 (\u00a3313,900) in legal fees for a failed lawsuit.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mr Trump&#8217;s $100m lawsuit accused the newspaper and Mr Trump&#8217;s estranged niece, Mary Trump, of &#8220;an insidious plot&#8221; to obtain his tax records.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A judge dismissed it last year, saying its claims &#8220;fail as a matter of constitutional law&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The series of articles on Mr Trump&#8217;s financial affairs won a Pulitzer Prize.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Friday, New York Supreme Court Judge Robert Reed, a Democrat, ordered Mr Trump to repay the New York Times for fees incurred by his failed legal action.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The judge said he arrived at the amount, $392,638, after considering several matters, including &#8220;the complexity of the issues presented&#8221; in the lawsuit, as well as the &#8220;ability and reputation&#8221; of the newspaper&#8217;s lawyers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The lawsuit,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/05\/07\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-taxes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over a 2018 investigation<\/a>\u00a0that alleged the former president was involved in &#8220;dubious tax schemes&#8221;, accused three journalists who reported on the story of working with Mr Trump&#8217;s niece as part of a &#8220;personal vendetta&#8221; against him.
