probation and must write an essay on the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant.<\/p>\n<p>Quantavious Eason, 10, was arrested in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/mississippi-5736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mississippi<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>after police caught him relieving himself behind his mother&#8217;s car while she was at a lawyer&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer for the family of the boy &#8211; who is black &#8211; claimed he would not have been prosecuted if he was white.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought any sensible judge would dismiss the charge completely,&#8221; said lawyer Carlos Moore.<\/p>\n<p>His request to get the case thrown out was denied and the prosecution threatened to upgrade the charges if he took it to trial.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Moore said he couldn&#8217;t find a case of a child getting a similar sentence for the same offence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think there is a male in America who has not discreetly urinated in public,&#8221; the lawyer added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He urinated next to the car behind the door &#8211; not exposing himself to anyone,&#8221; he told Sky&#8217;s US partner, NBC News.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He would not have been arrested, prosecuted or sentenced if he was any other colour, race, besides black.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors initially wanted Quantavious to write an essay about public decency, said Mr Moore, but the judge changed it to a piece on Bryant because the youngster likes basketball.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/23\/12\/768x432\/skynews-quantavious-eason-latonya-eason_6393667.jpg?20231215110640\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/23\/12\/384x216\/skynews-quantavious-eason-latonya-eason_6393667.jpg?20231215110640 380w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/23\/12\/768x432\/skynews-quantavious-eason-latonya-eason_6393667.jpg?20231215110640 760w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/23\/12\/1600x900\/skynews-quantavious-eason-latonya-eason_6393667.jpg?20231215110640 1024w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/23\/12\/2048x1152\/skynews-quantavious-eason-latonya-eason_6393667.jpg?20231215110640 2048w\" alt=\"Quantavious Eason and Latonya Eason.\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\"><span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Latonya Eason said her son&#8217;s sentence wasn&#8217;t fair<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Judge Rusty Harlow handed down the sentence on Tuesday at Tate County&#8217;s youth court.<\/p>\n<p>The boy&#8217;s arrest happened in Senatobia, Mississippi, on 10 August.<\/p>\n<p>Police chief Richard Chandler said he wasn&#8217;t handcuffed, but the child&#8217;s mother Latonya Eason said he was put in a cell.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Eason said the sentence wasn&#8217;t fair.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The average child would use the bathroom outside\u2026 and probably some grown men that would do the same thing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the officers had violated training on how to deal with children &#8211; and one was &#8220;no longer employed&#8221;, while the others would be disciplined.<\/p>\n<p>The head of civil rights organisation Colour Of Change said the decision to charge didn&#8217;t make sense.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nothing about this case from the decisions by the police, the prosecutor, and the judge makes us safer or is a good use of taxpayer resources,&#8221;
