{"id":26803,"date":"2023-12-17T09:08:33","date_gmt":"2023-12-17T14:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=26803"},"modified":"2023-12-17T09:08:33","modified_gmt":"2023-12-17T14:08:33","slug":"british-man-accused-of-swindling-nearly-100m-in-wine-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2023\/12\/17\/british-man-accused-of-swindling-nearly-100m-in-wine-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"British man accused of swindling nearly $100m in wine fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A British man accused of allegedly defrauding investors of nearly $100m (\u00a379m) through a Ponzi-like scheme involving non-existent luxury wines has pleaded not guilty in a US court.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Burton, 58, was extradited to New York from Morocco on Friday to face the charges after he was arrested in 2022 after entering that country using a fake Zimbabwean passport.<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors said Burton, along with a co-defendant, ran Bordeaux Cellars, a company they said brokered loans between investors and high-net-worth wine collectors.<\/p>\n<p>Burton pleaded not guilty to the indictment which was filed in 2022 and is being held pending trial.<\/p>\n<p>Burton and co-defendant James Wellesley allegedly solicited $99m from investors from June 2017 to February 2019, approaching them at places including conferences in the US and overseas.<\/p>\n<p>The men told lenders that the loans would be backed by wine they stored for wealthy collectors and promised profits through interest payments.<\/p>\n<p>However, these collectors &#8220;did not actually exist and Bordeaux Cellars did not maintain custody of the wine purportedly securing the loans,&#8221; the US Attorney&#8217;s Office for the Eastern District of New York said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Wellesley, also a British citizen, is currently awaiting extradition in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, the defendants could each face up to 20 years in prison for charges of wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>Source: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Sky News\" width=\"100\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/british-man-accused-of-swindling-nearly-100m-in-wine-fraud-case-pleads-not-guilty-13032414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news.sky.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A British man accused of allegedly defrauding investors of nearly $100m (\u00a379m) through a Ponzi-like scheme involving non-existent luxury wines has pleaded not guilty in a US court.
