{"id":2678,"date":"2016-11-10T20:21:25","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T01:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=2678"},"modified":"2016-11-10T20:21:25","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T01:21:25","slug":"survivor-of-cheshire-home-invasion-elected-to-connecticut-state-senate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2016\/11\/10\/survivor-of-cheshire-home-invasion-elected-to-connecticut-state-senate\/","title":{"rendered":"Survivor of Cheshire Home Invasion Elected to Connecticut State Senate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The doctor whose family was murdered in a horrific home invasion in 2007 has been\u00a0elected to the Connecticut state senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr William Petit, the only survivor of the attack that claimed the lives of his wife and two daughters, defeated Betty Boukus in the 22nd Senate District.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">His wife Joanna Hawke-Petit, 48, and their\u00a0daughters Michaela, 11, and Hayley, 17, died in their family home at the hands of Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2680\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/William-Petit-1-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"william-petit-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mrs Hawke-Petit was raped and strangled and the two daughters were both sexually assaulted before being tied to their beds and burned alive.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr. Petit was beaten with a baseball bat, tied up and taken to the basement, but he managed to escape and crawl to a neighbor&#8217;s house for help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The testimony in the 2011 trial in detailed how his wife was forced to withdraw\u00a0$15,000 from a bank after the criminals threatened to harm her family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Komisarjevsky and Hayes were both sentenced to death, but they were subsequently taken off death row and re-sentenced to life imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2681\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/William-Petit-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"william-petit-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/William-Petit-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/William-Petit-2.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Petit, a Republican, said he has no plans to try to revive Connecticut&#8217;s death penalty when he won his election.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ext-gen124\" class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The race hit the headlines last month when a labor union&#8217;s political action committee ran an advert that tried to link Petit to Donald Trump and &#8216;attacks on women and families.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3xCiBNPQJpc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The doctor whose family was murdered in a horrific home invasion in 2007 has been\u00a0elected to the Connecticut state senate.
