Mexico’s National Guard has arrested the alleged security chief of a faction of the Sinaloa cartel, N\u00e9stor Isidro P\u00e9rez Salas, also known as “El Nini”.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“El Nini” is accused of leading a ruthless group of bodyguards providing protection for the sons of Joaqu\u00edn “El Chapo” Guzm\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The sons, known as “Chapitos” (little Chapos), rose to lead a faction of the cartel after their father was jailed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The US had offered $3m (\u00a32.4m) for information leading to his capture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He is wanted there on drug trafficking and weapons charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The US authorities are trying to stem the flow of fentanyl from Mexico to the US by targeting the cartels which are smuggling the synthetic opioid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), three of El Chapo’s sons – Ovidio Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez and his half brothers Iv\u00e1n Archivaldo and Jes\u00fas Alfredo Guzm\u00e1n Salazar – have built a fentanyl-trafficking empire which smuggles millions of doses of the deadly opioid to the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ovidio Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez, also know as “El Rat\u00f3n” (The Mouse), was extradited to the US in September and\u00a0has pleaded not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and money laundering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The two other “Chapitos” remain at large.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“El Nini” is suspected of leading a violent group which provides personal security for the brothers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

According to US investigators, “El Nini” is one of the most feared hitmen for the Chapitos, tasked with kidnapping, torturing and killing rival drug traffickers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He was detained in Culiac\u00e1n, the capital of the state of Sinaloa, which is the stronghold of the cartel of the same name.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In a joint operation, soldiers and members of the National Guard swooped down on the Colinas de Rivera neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mexican media reported that “El Nini” tried to flee by climbing on to the rooftop of a house, but gave up after shots were fired.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He was quickly flown to Mexico City and extra security was deployed in Culiac\u00e1n to prevent\u00a0any outbreaks of violence such as those which paralysed the city after the first time Ovidio Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez was arrested<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“El Nini” is thought to have been behind the group’s retaliation for Ovidio Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez’s 2019 arrest, which included prison riots, shoot-outs and blockading major roads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The violence was such that President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador ordered Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez be released.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez was eventually re-arrested in 2023 and extradited to the US.<\/p>\n
