{"id":25703,"date":"2023-07-19T02:08:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T06:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=25703"},"modified":"2023-07-19T02:08:18","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T06:08:18","slug":"ricardo-martinelli-panamas-ex-leader-guilty-of-money-laundering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2023\/07\/19\/ricardo-martinelli-panamas-ex-leader-guilty-of-money-laundering\/","title":{"rendered":"Ricardo Martinelli: Panama&#8217;s ex-leader guilty of money laundering"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A court in Panama has found former President Ricardo Martinelli guilty of money laundering and sentenced him to 10 years and eight months in jail.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Martinelli, 71, has denied any wrongdoing and says the charges against him are politically motivated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">He is expected to appeal against the verdict, which comes less than a year before Panama&#8217;s presidential election.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Last month his party had chosen Mr Martinelli as its presidential candidate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Martinelli was in power from 2009 to 2014. Since he left office, he has faced a number of charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Two years ago, he was acquitted on charges of embezzlement and of spying on his opponents and journalists by tapping their phones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">But he is still facing another court case &#8211; expected to go to trial next month &#8211; in which he is accused of laundering bribes from Brazilian firm Odebrecht.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Martinelli says he is innocent and that the legal cases are aimed at keeping him from running for another term in office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In Tuesday&#8217;s ruling, the judge found that Mr Martinelli and several other accused had used millions of dollars from public funds to buy a majority share in one of Panama&#8217;s main media groups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Prosecutors alleged that the newspapers belonging to the group subsequently adopted an editorial line supportive of Mr Martinelli&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The judge also ordered that Mr Martinelli pay a fine of $19.2m (\u00a314.7m).<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-66236404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A court in Panama has found former President Ricardo Martinelli guilty of money laundering and sentenced him to 10 years and eight months in jail.
