Police in Farmington, New Mexico, said they believe the attacker, who was “confronted and killed on scene”, acted alone.<\/p>\n
“The suspect’s identity is unknown and there are no other known threats at this time,” the police department said in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n
The police said at least three civilians were killed in the shooting on Monday and more were wounded.<\/p>\n
Two police officers were also shot in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect – one city police officer and one with the New Mexico state police.<\/p>\n
Both were in a stable condition.<\/p>\n
The shooting was reported shortly after 11am in the Brookside Park area of the city.<\/p>\n
Schools in the city were put on lockdown on Monday. Three remained in emergency lockdown while others were placed in what officials called “preventative lockdown”.<\/p>\n
Farmington Police Department, San Juan County sheriff’s office, and the New Mexico State Police are investigating the shooting.<\/p>\n
An official at the San Juan County sheriff’s office called the incident “an open and active ongoing investigation”.<\/p>\n
Farmington has a population of around 46,000 residents and is in northwestern New Mexico, near the Four Corners region.<\/p>\n
It is around 180 miles (290km) northwest of the state’s largest city Albuquerque.<\/p>\n
