{"id":23784,"date":"2022-10-20T23:30:29","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T03:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=23784"},"modified":"2022-10-20T23:30:29","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T03:30:29","slug":"chess-player-hans-niemann-sues-for-100m-after-being-accused-of-cheating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2022\/10\/20\/chess-player-hans-niemann-sues-for-100m-after-being-accused-of-cheating\/","title":{"rendered":"Chess player Hans Niemann sues for $100m after being accused of cheating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The teenage chess player at the centre of an alleged cheating scandal, has launched a $100 million (\u00a389m) libel suit against the world champion and online platform Chess.com.<\/p>\n<p>Hans Niemann, 19, was accused of widespread cheating following a Chess.com investigation, which ruled it was\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/chess-player-hans-niemann-likely-cheated-in-more-than-100-online-games-investigation-claims-12712580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;likely&#8221; he cheated in more than 100 online games<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It came after he beat 31-year-old world champion Magnus Carlsen &#8211; considered the greatest player of all time &#8211; sending shockwaves throughout world chess.<\/p>\n<p>Chess.com, which has banned Niemann, is the world&#8217;s most popular chess platform and used detection tools and analysis of a player&#8217;s moves against those recommended by computers to put together its report.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation found no evidence of face-to-face cheating by Niemann against Carlsen or in any other in-person games.<\/p>\n<p>But it did suggest widespread cheating online.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23785\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Magnus-Carlsen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23785\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Magnus-Carlsen.jpg\" alt=\"Magnus Carlsen\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Magnus-Carlsen.jpg 640w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Magnus-Carlsen-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magnus Carlsen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/chess-player-accused-of-widespread-cheating-hans-niemann-breaks-silence-saying-he-wont-back-down-12713292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Niemann breaks silence, saying he &#8216;won&#8217;t back down&#8217;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed at a court in Missouri, USA also lists Carlsen&#8217;s online chess platform Play Magnus, Chess.com executive Danny Rensch and American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura as defendants.<\/p>\n<p>Niemann claimed the defendants are &#8220;colluding to blacklist&#8221; him from the professional chess world, and that he has been shunned by tournament organisers since five-time world champion Carlsen publicly accused him of cheating.<\/p>\n<p>Carlsen&#8217;s surprise defeat to Niemann and his subsequent withdrawal from the Sinquefield Cup in St Louis, Missouri in September sparked a furore of comments and allegations, including from Nakamura, that the American had cheated.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks after the Sinquefield Cup, the Norwegian resigned after just one move against Niemann in an online tournament.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Thursday, lawyers for Chess.com said there was no merit to Niemann&#8217;s allegations and the company was saddened by his decision to take legal action.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Chess.com looks forward to setting the record straight on behalf of its team and all honest chess players.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Representatives for Carlsen and Nakamura have not responded to requests for a comment.<\/p>\n<p>Niemann had previously been banned from Chess.com for cheating online, having admitted he had not played fairly in non-competitive games on the website in his youth, but denied any wrongdoing while contesting over-the-board games.<\/p>\n<p>His lawsuit said that Chess.com &#8220;banned Niemann from its website and all of its future events, to lend credence to Carlsen&#8217;s unsubstantiated and defamatory accusations of cheating&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Carlsen, having solidified his position as the &#8216;King of Chess,&#8217;
