{"id":23696,"date":"2022-10-11T21:03:39","date_gmt":"2022-10-12T01:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=23696"},"modified":"2022-10-11T21:03:39","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T01:03:39","slug":"parkland-school-mass-shooting-gunman-planned-systematic-massacre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2022\/10\/11\/parkland-school-mass-shooting-gunman-planned-systematic-massacre\/","title":{"rendered":"Parkland school mass shooting gunman planned &#8216;systematic massacre&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A man who carried out a mass shooting at a Florida school in 2018 planned a &#8220;systematic massacre&#8221; and should be sentenced to death, prosecutors say.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Nikolas Cruz, 24, pleaded guilty in October last year to 17 counts of murder and attempted murder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Closing arguments in his death penalty trial began on Tuesday, and a jury must decide whether he will be executed or spend the rest of his life in prison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The case is the deadliest mass shooting to reach a jury trial in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;What he wanted to do, what his plan was, and what he did, was to murder children at school and their caretakers,&#8221; assistant state attorney Michael Satz said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;It was calculated. It was purposeful. And it was a systematic massacre,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Satz gave a graphic moment-by-moment account of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, describing how each victim died and where they were located. Video of the attack was also shown to jurors in a bid to show how &#8220;tactical and purposeful&#8221; Cruz&#8217;s actions were.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Satz said the shooting was &#8220;highly premeditated&#8221; and included the aggravating factors that would justify the use of the death penalty under Florida law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">He also pointed to research Cruz had conducted online, as well as online comments in which he vowed to show &#8220;no mercy&#8221;. In one video, Cruz said he planned to be &#8220;the next school shooter&#8221; and that his goal was to kill 20 people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;What someone writes and someone says is a window into a soul,&#8221; Mr Satz said. &#8220;He told everybody what his plan was&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">During the closing argument, Cruz could be seen with his head in his hands. They will need to unanimously agree to recommend the death penalty.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Before his guilty plea last year, Cruz&#8217;s lawyers had asked the court to impose 17 consecutive life sentences for the massacre but that offer was rejected by prosecutors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Apart from the death penalty, the only other outcome for Cruz would be life in prison without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In most US criminal cases, a jury determines culpability after which the judge decides on the punishment. In this case, however, the jury must decide how Cruz will be sentenced.
