{"id":23397,"date":"2022-09-17T12:14:13","date_gmt":"2022-09-17T16:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=23397"},"modified":"2022-09-17T12:14:13","modified_gmt":"2022-09-17T16:14:13","slug":"mother-arraigned-on-murder-charges-after-her-three-children-drowned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2022\/09\/17\/mother-arraigned-on-murder-charges-after-her-three-children-drowned\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother arraigned on murder charges after her three children drowned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A mother charged with drowning her three children at New York&#8217;s Coney Island beach has been arraigned on murder charges.<\/p>\n<p>Erin Merdy faces three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of depraved indifference to human life, and three counts of murder where the victims are under 11 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Merdy&#8217;s children &#8211; seven-year-old Zachary Merdy, four-year-old Lilana Merdy, and three-month-old Oliver Bondarev &#8211; were found unconscious near the water&#8217;s edge in the early hours of Monday after a three-hour search.<\/p>\n<p>The search had started after a relative phoned police, concerned for the children&#8217;s welfare.<\/p>\n<p>Merdy was found barefoot and soaking wet, two miles from the scene, Police Chief Kenneth Corey said earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>NBC New York said the 30-year-old mother had been in hospital since her children were found dead.<\/p>\n<p>Merdy&#8217;s mother Jacqueline Scott, 56, told the Daily News that she was a loving mother but had been struggling recently.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Scott said: &#8220;She might have been going through postpartum depression.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She was a good mother.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I reached out to her (on Sunday &#8211; the day before the children were found dead) and she said she was doing laundry and I said I wanted to speak to the kids.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I tried to call her twice on the phone after that and there was no answer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Derrick Merdy, a navy veteran, told the New York Times he was the father of Zachary, but neither of the other children.<\/p>\n<p>He said he and Merdy had met on Facebook and married in 2014, breaking up shortly after Zachary was born in March 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Merdy said he had been fighting for custody of the little boy, describing his ex-wife as unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>When Zachary visited, he was often dirty and did not have enough clothing, Mr Merdy said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sky-news-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Sky News\" width=\"100\" height=\"20\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/mother-arraigned-on-murder-charges-after-her-three-children-drowned-12699332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news.sky.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A mother charged with drowning her three children at New York&#8217;s Coney Island beach has been arraigned on murder charges.
